I want to give a shout-out to the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl,a proper old-school hotel in the lovely Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partkenkirchen, in the Bavarian Alps. It's only an hour and a half drive from Munich which makes it perfectly doable for a long weekend break (which is what we did). There also seemed to be plenty of availability over February half-term, even when we booked at late notice.
The staff at the hotel are very friendly and helpful, and the rooms are comfortable and charming. Views from the rooms were nothing short of stunning. For us with two DS of 7 and 5, it was great, there were plenty of other children in the hotel for us not to feel self-conscious, but there was also a proper grown-up feel so we could enjoy a tad more sophistication. The games room for the kids next to the bar (a properly chic hotel bar) was a winning combination!
From a skiing point of view, the staff helped sort out ski hire and lessons before we arrived by putting us in touch with a local outfit, so the first morning there we were picked up from the hotel, delivered to the ski-hire shop, and once fully-equipped, were delivered to the bottom of the cable car (5 minutes drive from the hotel) with a teacher for the kids. Although there wasn't much snow in the valley, the higher ski area and especially the "kinderland" nursery area were well-covered. There is also skiing for the more adventurous skiers with the highest slopes in Germany.
The kids absolutely loved the whole experience - their first time on skis - they loved being in the mountains, but also loved coming back to the hotel, and, after a quick change, jumping into the stunning pool with its mountain views (which was perhaps a little on the "fresh" side for their mother).
We all loved the food at the hotel - great breakfast buffet, and the lovely little Bavarian restaurant for the evening.
For DH, who normally skis in France or Switzerland, Germany was a bit of a revelation - relaxed, well-organised and reasonably priced. The town of Garmisch itself is a proper Bavarian town rather than a ski resort, great for shopping and eating with all the amenities you could want.
