"Great location, fab skiing and lovely family friendly hotel…"
It had been a while since we'd done a package ski holiday and we were a bit nervous, but Inghams assured us that - having gone through our long list of requirements (our ages ranged from 81-6) -Obergurgl and specifically this hotel was the one for us and we were not disappointed.
The transfer from Innsbruck was painless, efficient and short , the reps were friendly and knowledgeable (and they even managed to get my brother-in-law a freebie trip when he showed up the following day having had an incident with an out of date passport...don’t ask)
The ski hire was underneath the hotel adjacent to a large, comfy boot room where you could store your gear, which itself was a 30 second walk from the first main lift. This was proper ski in/ski out.
The hotel is traditional Austrian style, the rooms pretty simple but pleasant enough and the south facing balconies had lovely sunny views over the mountains that the older folks particularly enjoyed while the rest of us were out skiing.
Ski school was friendly and conducted in English (such a pleasant change from ESF) and had morning and afternoon sessions with sensible start times - allowing for a relatively leisurely breakfast. The ski school would also provide lunchtime cover but we came back pretty much every day and the beauty of the resort was that this was very easy to do. They were also v relaxed if you wanted to take your child out for the afternoon.
For adults there were plenty of lovely wide, uncrowded slopes, lots of variety and the option to nip over to Hochgurgl on a huge, but never crowded cable car for a morning or afternoon. Spectacular, breathtaking views from the top of the mountain cafe in Hochgurgl –(see pic) it really is like something from James Bond. The most amazing thing was the lack of crowds - even at Feb half term sometimes you had a slope almost to yourself. The only busy time was at descent - when the easy slope heading to the hotel could get a bit busy. But there's a bar you can wait out the rush in and if you end up waiting too long they'll even skidoo you down the hill free of charge! There was also tons of off piste which you could dip in and out of and some great jumps and in and out of tree action for kids. The very easy beginners slope was a short walk away and my dad had it all to himself several times (he's not a beginner but he is 81!). There were also some lovely walks - well marked and ending in restaurants which he is eager to return to.
The food at the hotel was lovely - lots of choice even for fish eating veggies like me and fusspots like my children. Efficient and friendly service and sensational desserts with amazing apple strudel! The "spa" a mix of steam and saunas was large, mixed and naked - but once you got over it/ learnt to drape your towel it was a wonderful way to relax from a day's skiing. It's adults only so we took it in turns. The pool area was big and had nice comfy loungers and was open to adults and children. The only disappointment was the indoor and outdoor pools were a little bit chilly - but the jacuzzi was lovely and hot and very well used.
The town is not big and is mostly hotels and restaurants, but they do an amazing night show/ display every week, there's night skiing, night tobogganing (a bit scary) and I'm sure there's other apres ski but after a full day's skiing and a four course dinner I didn't really have the energy to find it. There's a kids playroom which had afternoon activities for littlies and a games room which my 11 year old disappeared to every evening and where he made lots of friends. There's also a comfy bar with fire where you can relax and chat or read which again the older folks enjoyed both afternoon and evening.
Overall we had a wonderful family holiday. Everyone from old to young enjoyed it. The location is excellent, the welcome warm and genuine, and the resort small but family-friendly. It's not cheap by any stretch, lots more than our usual self catering chalet – but pretty much everything was included in the Inghams price - lifts, ski school, ski hire etc - and if we can manage it, we'd love to go back.
