"Westcroft comes under the Baby Friendly Boltholes umbrella of hand-picked…"
29-Nov-2008
Westcroft comes under the Baby Friendly Boltholes umbrella of hand-picked properties, catering for families. It is great - we went for the first time in September, went back three weeks later and have just returned from another long weekend there. The guesthouse is a renovated Georgian coaching inn yards from the beach. Accommodation is laid out over three floors with a bedroom and adjacent bathroom (plus a lounge on the first floor) on the first two floors and the romantic Clock Tower suite with en suite bathroom - complete with roll top bath and skylights for stargazing - in the attic. On the ground floor is the dining room where owners Dylan and Sarah (they have a beautiful, child-adoring English pointer, Edie) serve delicious breakfasts, including fresh croissants from the village shop. The house is really stylishly furnished and there is a lot of attention to detail and emphasis on anticipating guests' needs. Once you have settled in with your children, Dylan and Sarah offer luxuries such as breakfast in bed (Dylan took our two-year-old rock pooling, she adored it and him!) and babysitting, with advance warning. They can even lay on a candlelight dinner if you don't want to go out. Kingsand is virutally car-free because the lanes are so narrow so you don't have to worry about traffic. The beach is delightful, and the views to die for. For one of our vists, we took the train from Paddington to Plymouth (three hours) and a cab to Kingsand (30 mins) or Dylan will gladly meet you if you ask him. Cots, bedding, toys and toiletries are provided so you can afford to travel light. There's also the Westcroft Gallery across the pretty courtyard behind the house, featuring local artists' work. Well worth a visit, highly recommended.
