"I was lucky enough to see the Disney Dream christened…"
I was lucky enough to see the Disney Dream christened by Jennifer Hudson as the fairy godmother, an energetic performance by the cast/crew and a giant champagne bottle smashed over the ship...what a start!
This was my first time on a cruise and the newly launched Disney Dream was a fantastic place to start. I was blown away! I'd never much fancied cruising before; I'd always imagine they'd be quite boring, I couldn't have been more wrong! So much detail has gone into the design, it looks incredible. There are Mickey Mouse mirrors in the restrooms, giant chandeliers and art deco inspired interiors.
This ship boasts two theatres and six restaurants. Animator's Palate was a particular favourite. Kids will absolutely love it. Not only is the food really good, it's themed like an animator's palate (funnily enough!) it has paint brushes on the table, Mickey Mouse salt/pepper shakers it really is lot of fun. The best bit about it all was the talking turtle. There are large TV screens around the whole restaurant and the turtle personally talks to you, actually says your name!
A personal highlight has to have been the AquaDuct water coaster. A lot more aggressive than it looks from the deck and too fast to be able to take in the stunning views, this ride can take two people on an inflatable raft. Don't be put off if there's a chilly breeze on the deck - the water is pretty warm on the ride.
The atmosphere on board is unreal with dancing Disney characters kids splashing in a massive Mickey Mouse swimming pool, crazy golf and people shooting through a giant water ride above deck, it creates an amazing buzz, even if you're not a Disney fan it's so infectious I had the songs stuck in my head days after the trip. But, if you're like me you'll soon need some pampering and when you do head to the Senses Spa & Salon. Some of the treatments are pretty pricey, I did see a facial that cost over $300, but manicures and massages aren't too bad, but you do too ring ahead as slots fill up fast! If you're traveling with teenagers there's the Chill Spa for teens aged 13 - 18. The fitness centre is free though, so pack your workout gear, I hadn't bothered and soon regretted that after filling up on so much food!
As you can imagine there's lots of youth activities to keep kids entertained with several clubs where they can play games, perform, watch movies and play of child friendly computers. There is also nursery on board too for babies between 3 months to 3 years.
The staterooms were far more spacious than I'd imagined. There's a separate toilet and shower room, a third bed which pulls out from the ceiling and a curtain to corner it off. I'd highly recommend staying in a room that has a balcony, the views are absolutely stunning and the door is completely sound proof so you can slip away for a quiet moment with the ocean view.
We stopped off at Disney's private island Castaway Cay, this is 3 miles of paradise. The first and second beaches are the liveliest and where most of the activities are, such as crab racing, snorkeling and water sports. I'm more of sun lounger and if you are too, the adults beach is an absolute must, it's about a 10 minute walk from the first beach, you walk down a long runaway to get there. The water is crystal-clear blue and the sand is pure white There's also a small sandbank which gives a stunning view of the island and ocean, follow the crowds walking towards it (don't do what I did and take your own route, I ended up neck deep in water!)
I'd advise to spend a few nights at the Walt Disney Resort Grand Floridian Resort & Spa first, we stayed there one night, but never fully recovered from the time difference, however there was always such much going on to keep you awake! And even in January the weather was fantastic so hot we all got sunburnt, it only rained on the last day! I have no hesitation in recommending this trip. You can book cruises from 3 nights and depending on when you book, prices are fromRead moreLess
