"There are positives and negatives about this site. We stayed here"

There are positives and negatives about this site.
We stayed here last year for May half term for 1 week. We are a family with 2 boys who were 4 and 7 at the time. We travelled with Canvas who we have holidayed with before.
The positives -
This is a well kept and pretty site, with well tended flower borders. The mini golf area especially is very green and tropical looking. There is an impressive pool, with 3 separate areas, 2 for children. You can also use the camp site's pool across the road which is great for variety. Canvas runs a 'Family Extra' animation scheme, which means you have better free activities than at most sites. We tried the water walking which involved stepping inside an oversize beach ball and being pushed out on the pool - very funny! They also have the usual children's clubs with arts and crafts etc. The best activity was the archery, which has separate sessions for children and adults every day. It was run by a really sweet instructor who was great with children. My oldest son loved this - pls note this is for age 6+ for obvious reasons. The site runs excursions but as we were slightly early season there were not many on at the time.
The Canvas 2 berth cabin was well appointed and pretty much what we were expecting having stayed with Canvas before. There was a gas BBQ next to the cabin, and while the on-site shop was OK, 4 mins drive away was an amazing Carrefour, the best stocked supermarket you could find anywhere. Don't buy any towels, flippers, beach toys from the site - go to Carrefour.
The negatives -
The weather in early June was very mixed - sunny when we arrived and cold and raining by the end of the week. Apparently it gets very hot later in the season but be warned, if you come for Whitsun half term the weather may be much cooler than you would expect, as this type of weather was typical for the area. We also found that there was not much to do on-site if it wasn't sunny (mini golf again anybody?). We were also disappointed with the local town. We took the mini-train from outside the campsite and after what was a 20 minute journey we were deposited at the beachfront. It was very tacky and had no seaside charm at all and was full of kebab shops, the mini train driver laughed when he collected us for the return journey a full 30 minutes after he had dropped us off! Neither the weather nor the seaside resort were the responsibility of La Sirene, however the on-site restaurant was. The food was fine as long as you like everything 'with chips'. You could even find kebabs. Again. No good French food I am afraid, just badly done fast food.
I didn't have a bad holiday as the archery saved it, however I wouldn't return to La Sirene as there is too much competition from other sites - try Portofelice in Italy, which was much nicer on every count.Read moreLessMumsnetter SuzyQand2

"Camping Soleil is such a great campsite, it is right"
05-Oct-2010
Camping Soleil is such a great campsite, it is right next to the beach and has an enormous pool. I grew up going to this campsite so i know it is great for small children and excellent for teenagers. My sister and I have started taking our little ones there now and the whole family love it so much. Everyone should give it a go!
