I bought this for my son who is seven.But to be honest I wish I'd bought it much earlier- its fantastic. I've put the age range as 5-8 but I think it depends on the child. Easy to put together and doesnt take up too much room in his bedroom. There are extras such as knights. castle playmat, trebuchet, prisoner cage and siege tower. He spends ages playing with it so I think worth the money. He did have a fort before hand but it never stayed together so think this is probably the best on the market.
