"Forget it. One of the most disappointing things I have…"
18-Dec-2010
Forget it. One of the most disappointing things I have ever purchased in my life, which is a shame considering it's from National Geographic.
I bought this for my son's bedroom and was so baffled by its crapness; I kept re-reading the instructions and thinking I must have done something wrong. Only after I'd asked my husband to fettle it did I realise it truly was that crap.
First, you press the button to start it and it starts rotating, accompanied by a robotic and very short, naff commentary about astrology - not astronomy. It's like a cross between Russell Grant and Professor Hawkins telling you the least educational stuff you could think of.
Secondly, it doesn't project anything other than blurred images. Only when you hold it about 2ft from the ceiling can you make out any pictures at all - which I guess defeats the whole object really.
The good news is that National Geographic have produced another one, presumably because of all the complaints and refund requests they received after releasing the first. Unfortunately, I haven't bought it so can't say what it's like.
If you are planning to buy one, just make sure it's the newer version because there is little difference in the name (it's simply "National Geographic Planetarium";) and also, make sure you read up on it first. You might save yourself a few quid and a lot of hassle.Read moreLess1 person found this review helpful.
