Love chess, but to make it more fun, try giant outdoor pieces. Like these.

I was amazed how keen my dds have been on chess, it never interested me, but it's kept them happy and occupied on holidays, at home, with other children, with older relatives. One of the classic games that will last for years, or a lifetime.

Chess is easy to learn and many children can start picking it up from age 3 or 4. Start off with just the pawns and the king, and gradually introduce the other pieces. Once the boys became proficient, we found a Chess Clock to be a helpful addition to prevent interminable games.
Top tip for buying, but a standard set with full-size pieces, rather than a cheaper one. Wooden pieces feel wonderful to handle as well.Read moreLessMumsnetter roisin

Chess is a fab game to play with your children. It gives children the chance to use parts of their brain that is often asleep. Its also great for parents to have chill out time with their children, and to have individual time with their child. The wooden chess sets are sturdy and long lasting, a game that never goes out of date.

we were given one last year for my daughter - such a good present. We do variations - just using knights, or bishops or castles - and pawns - to teach her how the pieces work slowly. imaginative for all concerned and endlessly different and fun. Who needs battery operated??!
