Mumsnetters' comments: "We got a simple, no batteries mobile with coloured fish, and we hung it over the changing table for the first 18 months. Blowing the fish around amuses my daughter and it's a useful distraction". "I can't think of anything else which has served for the same length of time - all the other newborn stuff is now abandoned". "The black and white mobiles are particularly good for newborns, who are only able to see things in monochrome".Read moreLess

"In 2005 my eldest daughter (then 15 months) was hospitalised…"
In 2005 my eldest daughter (then 15 months) was hospitalised for a week with Pneumonia. During this time she was understandably unhappy and restless - not enjoying spending long hours lying in a cot, staring at the ceiling. Fortunately, the Symphony in Motion Mobile from Tiny Love came to the rescue! This is definitely the best cot mobile I have ever come across. Instead of usual generic tinny tones of "Twinkle, Twinkle...;"; it plays some lovely famous piano pieces from Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven, these can be played one after the other or separately. The mobile is cleverly positioned at an angle so that as the mobile turns, different coloured shapes move up and down each of the four wire arms, at the end of which is a different brightly-coloured animal which hangs down. All of my children have been intrigued and fascinated by this wonderful invention and have been happy to lie underneath it in their cots while I get on with the housework ...; or a quiet sit down with a cup of tea!!Read moreLess

My husband bought a wind-up one of these, much to my annoyance as I thought it would be a complete gimmick. However, it has proved a godsend and is almost guaranteed to send baby Sonny to sleep in one wind of the mechanism. However, some mobiles do play longer then others, so it can be useful to check how long it'll be before you have to return and wind again!Read moreLess
