Our babies loved being swaddled. All cosy and warm, they settled easily and slept well.
I would highly recommend a swaddle blanket, with velcro the best method of securing the blanket.Read moreLess
"Newborns love to be tightly wrapped up with all their…"
Newborns love to be tightly wrapped up with all their limbs snug against their body - they can get scared in all the open space seeing their flailing limbs around them. I knew all this as I'm a midwife, and was a pretty good 'swaddler' - but when my son was born, he was like Houdini - he just fought off traditional triangular swaddle blankets.
When he was 6 weeks old a friend recommended a Miracle blanket, which has been an absolute godsend. Although it can look a bit like a straitjacket, the design is simple but genius - the arms are held next to the body by the baby's own bodyweight. Our son had reflux and would arch his back and scream a lot after feeds, but we found when he was swaddled he would stay calmer and sleep much better.
As we started using it, his sleep improved from a few hours at a time to about 6 hours during the night. He's now 15 weeks old and still using it, although we leave one arm out now so he can suck his fingers in the night.
It's pure lightweight stretchy cotton and is fine for both summer and winter use, although extra blankets would be needed during the colder months.
The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths actually recommend swaddling as it helps keep babies on their back.
I would absolutely recommend it.Read moreLess
