We had one of these bought for us but I've always used washable nappies. My advice would be to check with the parents if you are thinking of buying this as a gift.

I had one of these - to be honest, it was quite helpful at first & does hide smells but the refills are expensive. We soon gave up using it & put nappies straight in the bin!

I am personally not keen on these at all. They are bulky, and you need to buy cartridges for them to continue using them. I think a good gift is one which doesn't have to be topped up so if someone has specifically asked for this and you don't know them well enough to question their judgement, then buy some extra cartridges too.
Make sure the recipient will not be using cloth nappies and indeed has no ecological leanings whatsoever.
I would rather give someone a nice Brabantia bin which is great for supressing odours.Read moreLessMumsnetter TheButterflyEffect

I live in a one bedroom flat, so you can imagine the odour of regular baby changing can linger in a small enclosed space. But this unit is definitely a must have for any mum living in small quarters. I was given the nappy disposable unit as a gift from a close male friend, and I found it to be a lifesaver, but even more so a smelly saver!!

I thought these were a smelly waste of space. The scent on the lining bags was awful! Don't do it - although, admittedly, everyone thinks they're a good idea before they try them.

Used this for DS 1 and thought it was o.k. The replacement spools are expensive, though, and the clips that hold it in place always fall off (really fiddly to reattach and the last thing you need). I can see how some people like them but even with the bags, 25 nappies will whiff a bit. On the other hand, when it's blowing a gale in the middle of November and the dustbinis a bridge too far, this will be your favourite.

"I was bought this as a leaving present from work and it was invaluable." "It lasted through both my children and really stopped nasty smells (it uses scented plastic to make an airproof bag for used nappies)." "It holds up to 25 nappies and saves searching for bags at every change of nappy." "Not the most glamorous present but very useful." "It's not everyone's cup of tea, but we loved ours."
