If you buy a cheap plain canvas and some black paint you can get your DC's to make hand and footprints on them. Very easy (and you can do it for little babies while they are sleeping) and looks effective as a much cheaper version of the foot/hand casts.
(just make sure you wipe paint of properly or your 6 month old will have emo type black nail varnish)

I took my daughter to get her hand and foot prints done with clay. This was a great gift!
