"Not the best - too heavy without the baby!…"
26-Sep-2012
I find this carseat is too heavy even before I put the baby in - would probably be ok for a newborn if you wanted to carry it!
I also think this carseat is very upright for a rear facing seat.
Overall i dont really like the seat!Read moreLessMumsnetter Dordeydoo

25-Jan-2012
this is quite simply the worst car seat I have experienced and I would advise anyone considering buying one of these to think again. it weighs a tonne without a child in it but the worst thing is that now at 12 weeks old, when my baby falls asleep the seat offers no support to his head. his head flops about so horribly I have to stop the car to get him out as no matter what position I put him in, every time he falls asleep the same happens every time. I need to buy a separate head support but at this age he should not need one. I would have understood for a newborn but not at this age.

I think this a fantastic carseat. Yes it's heavy especially with our son in it but we don't carry him around in the seat - it just stays in the car and as for people saying installation is difficult and leaves baby sat in an unnatural position, that's rubbish. It's idiot proof and the seat sits perfectly leaving baby in a nice reclined position. I would buy this seat again and intend on purchasing another M&P seat when our chap outgrows this one :)

"I would like to add my voice to all these…"
05-Feb-2011
I would like to add my voice to all these others who have said DO NOT BUY this car seat. We bought it along with the pramette and it not only weighed a ton, but our son's head flopped forward and we were terrified every time he went into the car seat. The rain/sun cover for the car seat is totally hopeless too.
The system is unweildy, heavy and difficult to clip into the isofix base and the pushchair. I was a sleep-deprived, exhausted new mum and would often fill up with tears when I simply could not fix the heavy seat into the car or the pram. I gave up on occasion and didn't go out, such was the frustration.
We took the whole system back to M&Ps now that my son is 13 months old as the pushchair is so narrow, he can't sit back in it. We got NOWHERE. You'd think we'd gone in and said that the car seat/pushchair had given us plague or something. We are a couple on a low wage who have foolishly spent a great deal of money on an overpriced, poorly designed system that we are stuck with.
Mamas and Papas customer service team and designers should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.Read moreLess1 person found this review helpful.

26-Mar-2010
Its a great seat, the rolled up towel thing is true or there are foam tubes you can buy or the newest adjustable base. If your car seat dips down then of course the car seat will. some people don''t have a clue. THE SEAT IS HEAVY FOR SAFETY. light ones tilt when you turn corners, this one does not move at all. and as long as you put the handle down against the back of the seat it should show you how much of a gap there is to fill without the base. If you buy cheaper brands because they are lighter you will be very frightened when you go around a roundabout.

02-Nov-2009
Terrible purchase!
Very heavy - too heavy to carry baby in at all.
Doesn't sit right in the car - if you don't want it so upright that your baby's head lolls dangerously forward (meaning that in an accident it would slam back from down by their chin into the back of the chair) then you have to muck about with a rolled up towel trying to wedge it between the car seat and the base in a way that makes it flat!!! (This is actually what it says to do in the safety manual too which seems absolutely ridiculous to me.)
Also difficult to fasten baby into seat and we are yet to figure out how the hell you are supposed to get the padding off to wash though you are supposed to be able to! DO NOT BUY!!Read moreLess1 person found this review helpful.

30-Aug-2009
Ours is a newer version than the one pictured (bought Spring 2008).
Positives: DD seems comfortable. The straps are easy to do up. The shoulder height is easy to adjust.
Negatives: really heavy to carry, even without a baby in it, and so we hardly ever carried DD around in it. Also quite difficult to clip out of the car, and we found that if she was asleep, DD would always wake up while we struggled with removing the car seat from its base.
DD has also managed to pick at the large fabric safety label on the side so much that it's really fraying. An aesthetic thing only, but quite annoying.Read moreLessMumsnetter Wigeon

Although it feels very sturdy it is incredibly heavy and so very difficult to carry around and get in and out of the car. The angle at which the baby is positioned is also not ideal for a newborn and although my son sleeps ok in it he does often make funny uncomfortable sounding noises!

22-May-2009
Some of the reviews here were a bit harsh. A new version of the seat came out in 2008 so some older reviews are not relevant. It is a bit heavy but not much different to many others. As for the angle as long as the centre of the seat is vertical the posture is fine. I suspect some users are leaving the seat tiled forward flat on the car seat. Our baby sleeps in it no problem in and out of the car. Many official reviews and others from the USA where it is sold without the M&P badge seem good. Seems well padded and strong which is important and even without the base reasonably easy to get in and out of the car.

"We were appalled at just how badly designed this seat…"
16-Sep-2008
We were appalled at just how badly designed this seat is. It offered virtually NO SUPPORT whatsoever for our wee boy. His head was lolling about and he was all too often leaning forward onto his own chin. The design is HIGHLY suspect. We had it installed by staff at our local M&P store, and they seemed at the time to know what they were doing. However, after a couple of days we went back there and showed them what we felt was a real problem with the position of our baby boy. We were told that this was simply the design of that particular seat. We were really really concerned about this, and as a result, we eventually (after about a month) ended up buying a replacment McLaren car seat. Much, much better.
AVOID THE PRIMO VIAGGIO SEAT AT ALL COSTS!!

17-Apr-2008
I have purchased the newest 2007 model of the Primo Viaggio for my Aria Twin+.
This car seat looks lovely and trendy but thats about the only good thing about it.
Its far too upright for a newborn, we have had to prop it up everytime weve used it, or take little one straight out when we get home.
we have a ford focus estate and its a nightmare trying to get it in as seatbelt too short, and the car seat base also makes it far too upright.
it also weighs a tonne! im finding it heavy and my baby's only 4 weeks old.
Overall Im VERY DISSAPOINTED. I would not advise buying one.Read moreLessMumsnetter kezktchloe

"If you bought this car seat take it back now.…"
02-Apr-2008
If you bought this car seat take it back now. It's far too upright and your newborn will not be confortable in it. M&P guarantee that it is safe but I just can't see how. My son's head keeps dropping forward and he never ever seems coccooned into the car seat as I see other babies. The base is a total waste of money; I can't see any difference between puting the base on or strapping the seat in with the seatbelf. Because the chair is so upright you can't put the hood up otherwise you won't be able to see your baby through your inside mirror.
The only reason why we stuck with this rubbish car seat is because while on maternity leave I walked everywhere with DS; now that I'm back at work and DS is over 9kg I'm buying a forward facing car seat.Read moreLessMumsnetter number1

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR SEAT!!!
The matching Pliko Pramette pram/pushchair is pretty good - light and, after a bit of practice, fairly easy to fold down or convert from pram to pushchair. I got my pram and car seat when they were on special offer and am pleased with the pram. The big let down was the car seat. It is absolutely RUBBISH - the worst baby product I have bought. It's too heavy and too upright for a small baby and is a real hassle to fit into car (although it goes easily on to the pram). I doubt gives a young baby adequate protection or comfort. I have nearly done myself an injury struggling with it on several occasions. I repeat DO NOT BUY - really!Read moreLessMumsnetter Mouth

"As a first time mother, I went to this high…"
13-Dec-2007
As a first time mother, I went to this high street market, trusting their reputation, and bought this car seat as a part of the travel system. Over the first couple of months I didn't realise how different it was from other car seats on the market and how upright it was as I had other problems like breastfeeding, tounge tie, talipes, etc. I thought all carseats were the same and continued sitting back of the car and supporting my little baby's head with my hand (I am crying when I remember those days). Afterwards, I realised and felt extremely guilty about buying this car seat and putting my innocent baby in it. I changed it to another brand but the guilt just didn't go! This car seat has been one of the strongest reasons of my postnatal depression.
Too upright for a newborn baby, my baby's head was flopping sides and fronts. There is no enough head support etc for a newborn.
Mamas and Papas should discontinue this car seat immediatelly, apologise all their customers who bought this product as a result of their naivity, and even refund their money. I am protesting M&P and not buying anything from them anymore. I could have afforded any car seat and I was well preapared to spend quite a lot money for my precious baby. I just trusted M&P, I shouldn't have, I should have done more research. This is so difficult to cope!
Now I am warning all my friends and everybody I know about this car seat.
Please don't even consider this car seat for your new babies. Avoid! I am giving 1 points as there are no zeros, and maybe it is slightly better than leaving your baby lying alone on the back seat. I hope this explains how dissapointing it was.Read moreLess3 people found this review helpful.

Great car seat, nicely padded and very comfortable. Really like the g-matic clip in system as this works for both in the car and the buggy (I used mine in combination with an MPX chassis). Nice and sturdy with great choice of colour options. The only problem I found was that the sun canopy/hood doesn't provide much shade and was more of a fashion accessory

"There's no doubt about it - this car seat looks…"
15-Oct-2007
There's no doubt about it - this car seat looks ultra stylish!! But I wish I hadn't bought it. Something I wasn't made aware of when I bought it in the store is that it's an "upright" design, supposedly making it safer for the baby. I disagree, if that were the case every seat on the market (and in Mamas & Papas itself) would be upright and they aren't! Because it's so upright my baby's head is sitting hunched over her body. At first I went back to the shop and asked them about this - I also explained that every time my baby sat in it she brought milk up. I was told that after a few months she would fit into it better and this wouldn't happen. NOT TRUE - she is now 6 months and she is still all hunched up in it and looks so uncomfortable. I switched to a Maxi Cosi seat last week and it is sooooo much better! The other problem with it is that it is so big with the base unit and is a right pain to fit. I would never be bothered taking it out of the car to go into the supermarket for instance. Mums to be beware!!!!!

Reviewers liked the G-matic system that allows you to "click the seat into a base which remains in the car" which makes "installation easy and right every time" and means "there's no fumbling around in the pouring rain". Once in, everyone agreed it's "solid as a rock". "Fantastic looking" there were a few complaints about portability "it's not that heavy but like a lot of car seats it's pretty bulky to carry around". Although reviewers thought it "safe, padded and comfy" a few thought it "a bit too upright for a newborn".

Personally, next time I would go for an ISOFIX car seat - I feel as if the Primo Viaggio is a half way house - you fit the seat into a base in the car, and then you still have to wrap a seat belt around the car seat and move the handle in order to secure the seat in the car. The base doesn't feel very secure as it is only fastened by the seat belt. I didn't really research it properly as I wanted to 'click and go' - which you can't do with this!

Do not buy this seat if you drive a VW Golf - it's a nightmare to install. The seat belts have to be retracted right back in each time before they can be pulled out and around the seat which means unfastening the seat belt from the base every time you want to use it. Takes ages and you need to put the baby somewhere (usually in the road!) while you do it. VW calls it a 'safety feature'!!!!

Mine came as part of a Mamas and Papas travel system, and was very easy to use with the pram. In theory, it is also really simple to use in the car as it slots firmly into its own base - however, I found this impractical when travelling by air/train with my baby, as I needed to either take the bulky base with me or hire/borrow another car seat when I reached my destination. I also found it irritatingly difficult to fit my rear seat belt over the seat once clicked into the base - it was only just long enough. So do try two or three seats in your car before buying; if I had done this rather than just checking that the Primo Viaggio fitted, I may well have changed my mind and gone for a different solution for both pram and car seat.

whilst it is easy to fit onto base which is good for bad weather you still need to fit the seatbelt around the seat which is a bit of a pain, i found it a bit too upright for my daugher when she was newborn but good once she was a bit older as she could see more.

Very quick to get in and out of the car (click in system) and very nice looking. Also compatable with the travel system. However, I would not recommend this product to anyone who uses their car quite frequently as we do. This car seat is too upright, especially when you add the slight slope that most cars have on their seats. Our baby slips down the slope and his head flops forward as the head hugger is not as good as other car seats such as the Maxi-Cosi. We have had to remove the head hugger before our baby is ready. Others in our antenatal classes have found this and I would not recommend it. Our baby looks extremely uncomfortable in this car seat.

I am so disappointed with this product. At time of purchase I was told that this was universal and would fit in any type car. This is not the case. This seat is really too upright and because it is clearly not universal it makes baby head position very akward. I have contacted mamas and papas and I am awaiting a response.

Easy to install and looks great but we've had to do a bit of DIY to make it suitable for our newborn. As most car seats have a bit of a slope on them he wasn't sitting back enough so we've used a bit of foam below the car seat fixing unit to make sure his head doesn't flop forward all the time. (8 score for comfort is after adaptation)

I found this was way too upright for my newborn baby - in fact, I went and bought a different seat. It also did not fit both our cars, so drivers of small cars beware. I know neither my Dad and my husband like reading instructions, but it took two engineers a very long time to install the base into the car.

Looks great but impractical. Is hard to release the seat from the base tray as the base tray seems to always want to come out with it - very frustrating. Also, my baby's head seems to flop forward even if i have the seat angled all the way back. When i recently discussed this car seat with a John Lewis rep, she admitted they find it difficult to fit it correctly in their showroom car seat. Would not buy again. Think the MaxiCosi or Britax ones are more laid back and therefore baby is more comfortable. Wish I had bought one of these.

It's very good if you buy it along with M&P pram. Otherwise I wouldn't buy it. It's well padded and installation is very easy. However, you need a base in order to instal it and the hood doesn't stay stablly. It's a bit upright and my baby seemed a bit uncomfortable in it when she was young but she managed to sleep well everytime she's in the care journey. It's almost too wellpadded and it's quite hot in summer. Also warning note on the side of carseat came out not long after using it.

Way too upright for a newborn - she was slumped right forward in it until she was about 4 months old.
The 'one-click' system isn't that straightforward because you have to fiddle with the seatbelt around the back of it - this is tricky if the seatbelt has locked. It's really heavy to carry around. Not a good buy at all.Read moreLess"Quite happy with it although what follows seems rather negative.…"

Quite happy with it although what follows seems rather negative. Some of it probably applies to all infant carriers though:
It's heavy - stopped carrying baby in it at 6 months, lift him out instead, (and he's not heavy for his age).
The new style base, (the one with the spirit level), is NOT an improvement. In one particular car, if the base is fitted "correctly", the seat belt won't reach and the handle doesn't touch the back of the seat - something M&P say is essential for safety.
The old style base is easy to install. Because you always have to use the base, fitting the seat is also easy. To lift out, you just squeeze the handle on the back to unclip the seat.
A little inconvenient that you have to use the base. Have since seen another brand of car seat which has an alternative means of installation if you've not got the base which seems like a great idea.
The handle can be difficult to move - you need strong thumbs ! It's defeated all but one grandparent.
Bought as part of a travel system so value for money doesn't really apply. Fits easily onto the pushchair and has been v. useful.
It claims to last up to approx 15 months but have just moved the straps to the max setting for 7 month old ! Can't see it lasting another 8 months somehow.Read moreLess"heavy and child sits too far forward…"

I felt my son was really safe in this seat - the way the bar moves to prevent the carrier slamming up against the rear of the car seat in the event of an accident was really reassuring (although fortunately untested!!). It is impossible to fit this seat incorrectly, which is important for me moving the carrier from car to pushchair and back again, as the base remains in the car. This is the next best thing to an Isofix system. Very male (and grandparent) friendly!!!

Great if you really want the car seat as part of the travel system. Too upright for a newborn or a sleeping older child for that matter (head flops awkwardly when sleeping). Side impact protection isn't as impressive as on other seats. Would opt for a safer seat rather than buy this one as part of a travel system.

This is first stage rear facing car seat which will theoretically serve a child till about 10-13 kg.
The feature of this seat is the fact that it's a 'click-in' one, which means that you have a base that can stay permanently in the car and a seat proper that can be very easily taken out and put in without a need to do much threading of the webbing.
The seat can be also clipped onto the relevant Mamas and Papas chassis to become a part of a travel system.
Does it work, then? Yes, it does work in the sense that the base stays in the car and the seat clips in and out very easily. It's not a totally threading-free job as the diagonal part of the belt still has to be threaded in the back of the seat, but it's indeed easier.
But apart from that the seat has been a bit of a disaster for me.
Firstly, it's very heavy and bulky and carrying it around for any length of time when you go somewhere without a buggy (and I mean something like 10 minutes) is a real pain.
Secondly and most importantly, in our car (and I believe it's the case in at least some others too) the back seat has a raising slope which means that the base doesn't sit flat (as in parallel to the ground) and thus when the seat is clipped in the baby is rather vertical. I have not experienced the forward head-lolling I read complained about but my son doesn't like it.
Thirdly, which compounds the problem with the base, is the fact that the seat is a solid mould, rather deep and the back rest is not adjustable.
These two factors mean that my baby is folded at something approaching 90 degrees angle, and virtually *sits* in the seat. And I can tell you, neborns or two month olds are not made to be sitting for any length of time!
Considering the fact that we live in the countryside and thus do almost no get-in-and-out quick town driving but do less frequent and longer journeys varying from 30 to 90 minutes, the comfort factor is crucially important and he is just not comfortable in this seat. After about 20-30 minutes he seems to get something like a crick in his neck and starts grumbling, crying or screaming until he gets adjusted and his position changed a bit. It's also very difficult to give him milk or water while he's in the seat as it tends to dribble out of his mouth.
In addition to the car seat/travel system buggy top, the seat has a curved bottom and thus can be used as a rocker. I found this pretty useless feature as my baby doesn't like sitting in it out of the car either (though the line up is better on the floor) and prospect of rocking doesn't seem to make much difference, but some people might find it useful.
The padding on this seat is generous and snug and both the cover and the webbing can be taken off for washing (though threading the webbing back is a pain).
The buckle is easy to put together and easy to open while the length of the harness can be adjusted without any problems.
All in all, it's not a BAD product as such, but it didn't work for me at all. This doesn't mean that it won't work for you, but this would depend on your car (and specifically the slope of its back seat), how well your baby takes to *sitting* for longer periods of time and the kind of driving you do. For a busy mother with more than one child who needs to do a lot of taking the baby in and out of the car on short distances this might be just what's needed, especially if combined into a travel system with the compatible Mamas and Papas chassis. For somebody who travels on longer distances but without the need for quick and frequent loading and unloading I would recommend a traditional seat with adjustable back rest or at least one in which the baby is closer to a horizontal position.
I would suggest trying one out before buying, otherwise, at well over ?100 (RRP is something like ?150 but you can get it for less online), it might be a very expensive mistake to make!Read moreLess"If you have a larger than average child then this…"

If you have a larger than average child then this car seat is not suitable. My son always looked squashed up in this car seat, his shoulders were too wide so his back was hunched up. We had trouble fitting him in the car seat with a coat on and eventually had to buy another car seat when he was 16 weeks old.
On the plus side it is incredably easy to install into you car because the base is fitted and the car seat just clicks into place.Read moreLess"Really heavy and even though the it clicks into the…"

Unless you are obsessed with a matching car seat or want to use it as a travel system - (not sure why as babes shouldn't be in car seats for too long so put them in the prammette). i would not recommend this. The base system is ludicrous it's not any easier it's too fussy and way too bulky plus you need an enormously long car seatbelt, the hood is too bulky and blocks easy access to the seat belt attachment. Also with no head support your babies head lolls around and looks uncomfortable I brought this then realised how awful it was then returned it and purchased a maxi cosi - the best buy yet!

Good to make up a travel system with the Pramette - easy to put on the pram frame.
Not so easy to put in and out of our new Honda Civic as the car has a retractable seatbelt and this makes it easier to put the car seat in and fasten it with the seat belt.
Not great for comfort when our baby was newborn (6lb 4oz) as he looked squigged down as the car seat was too upright for him. As he got older his head often fell forward or to the side a bit. Now he's 3 months old it fits very well and is great for him.
Very heavy if you have had a c-section and try to carry the car seat with a new baby in it (however this may be the same for all car-seats if you'd had a c-section)Read moreLess
