"With three children, a dog and two cats, vacuum cleaners…"
With three children, a dog and two cats, vacuum cleaners get a serious work out in my house! The Vax LiFE upright appealed because it was lightweight, bagless, cordless and according to the manufacturer does everything a vac should. Having used it for a while I have a couple of small nitpicks but other than that the Vax LIFE has more than lived up to the manufacturer's blurb.
It is a pleasure to use...easy to manoeuvre, extremely lightweight (I can pick it up with one finger) and a doddle to clean out. It is deceptively powerful and makes light work of everything I've put it to task over (including pet hair) which was surprising because from the size it's obvious this is not meant to be the main household vacuum, certainly not in a busy family home; I had it simply as an addition to my house blitzing arsenal - something that the kids could put around their rooms without too much bother or that I could run round quickly after parties, before guests arriving, after spillages, that kind of thing. Yet if I'm honest it's that efficient I've been using it more and more making my main vac somewhat redundant! And the kids love using it, have even argued over who gets to use it! It would seem blue lights and losing the cord have made it a winner in their eyes!
The dirt container isn't very big and fills up quickly. This isn't a criticism, just something that indicates that the Vax LiFE isn't meant to be a main vacuum cleaner in a family home though I can see it would be ideal for people that do not have many floor surfaces to clean - students and caravan owners for example. The dirt container is exceptionally easy to clean however, hold over a bin, pull the release catch and out the dirt falls into the bin. Like most bagless models it does need a more thorough cleaning every now and again. This is as simple as removing the inner mechanism to free it of anything that is stuck or clinging to it. The filter is easy to deal with too...untwist, tap, swill through with water and dry...simples! The battery life is very good...I can go over all the floors in the house one and a half times (which takes about 15-20 minutes) before the battery gives out.
The LiFE upright has two modes of use - with or without the brush-bar, so it deals with hard floors just as well as it does carpets - in that sense due to its (light) weight and manoeuvrability, it's a bit like an electronic broom that takes the bits with it! The biggest downfall of the upright is it can't do crevices, stairs or upholstery. However this is addressed by the cordless hand-held which is now included in the LiFE Multipack along with the upright. This is much like a smaller, hand-held version of the upright and makes light work of most tasks. The only issue I found (and these are my two nitpicks) is that it doesn't appear to be powerful enough to deal with anything that isn't loose and sat directly on the surface, and the dusting brush which attaches onto the crevice tool won't stay in place; the mechanism is really clever, the way the crevice tool comes out on a hinge to slot into place, however this has meant that the brush drops out of place as soon as even the lightest pressure is applied. This has rendered the brush tool fairly useless which is a shame, because it's the only thing that really lets it down and could easily be addressed.
All in all, I can't imagine life without my Vax LiFE now, and with two cleaners for the price of one in the pack, a 6 year guarantee and kids fighting over who gets to use it, I really do feel I've had value for my money!Read moreLess
