"So good even teenagers want to use it!…"
We have a variety of floors in our house, decrepit old quarry tiles in the kitchen, pretty Minton ones in the hall, wooden floors in the dining room and a carpet in the sitting room so I was really pleased to be chosen for this trial. The one I was sent did not have the removable Delta Head, but was called Steam Mop Deluxe.
Setting up the machine was easy although the instruction booklet made it look more complicated than it actually was. Once the water reservoir was on, it was difficult to get it back off again so I refilled it in situ from a jug – not entirely sure if it was supposed to come back off or not. Anyway once it was set up I was raring to go!
I was really pleased with the long cord length as I could do quite a distance without having to faff about unplugging it. The settings on the top are very simple to use and the extra steam burst is great for getting into the nitty gritty bits. It’s easy to push around and the swivelly head is brilliant for getting into corners and along skirting boards.
The tiles in our house have been down since the 1930’s, so there was plenty of work for the steam mop to do, despite regular mopping and once, and only once (!), down on my hands and knees with a scrubbing brush. I steamed half the Minton tiles and left the other half till the morning to see the difference and was amazed that they had come up so bright after one application. Likewise the quarry tiles although they are not in fantastic condition, but you could see the difference.
The wooden floors came up quite a bit cleaner too, although to be fair they do need a sand and varnish again so I think the results will be better when this has been done. I’ve not had an opportunity to try it on carpet yet but will be doing so soon. The removable cleaning pads are a great idea and came out of the washing machine like new.
We have four cats and four teenagers traipsing in and out so the steam mop certainly had its work cut out for it here – it seems to have cut down on the dust/cat hair situation too, which is good as we have an allergy sufferer. All in all I think this is a brilliant little gadget, very handy and easy to store, and much easier than getting your mop and bucket out. An added bonus is that the teenagers are keen to try it out!

"Does what it says in (complicated) booklet…"
I was sent a Black & Decker steam-mop deluxe with Autoselect to review as part of a Mumsnet panel. Set up instructions are more complicated than necessary, with 2 sets of diagrams, and photos as well, and a lot of small print to read. It wasn't easy to fit together and at first I couldn't get it to start because I hadn't fitted it all together correctly. Once it did work (only took a few seconds to sort out) it was great. I tried it on marble/stone tiles, laminate, solid wood and lino flooring, after a quick sweep. The steam adjusted to each surface perfectly (when I pressed the right button) and I was not in fear of my laminate or lino becoming unstuck or ruining the condition of the wood or stone. More to the point, it lifted all the dirt and the odd sticky spot was quickly removed with the use of the booster button, which releases 10 seconds of extra steam, at slightly more pressure.
As I am now working from home and have to get these floors looking the part (twice a week, starting next week) I was looking forward to swapping this for my mop and bucket. having to mop the floor in advance to allow it to try and keeping the kids off it all was not conducive to a happy working environment. Using the steam mop, the floors take no time to dry at all, so I will be swapping. However I do think this particular mop seems a little unwieldy due to the tilting/rocking head and so is slower to use than other steamers. It is much quicker to get out of the cupboard and start using, easy to plug in and fill and I only needed to fill it once to clean all the floors (I might have to refill if I used the booster button more often). I needed to plug it into 4 separate places to cover all the hard floor areas in my house, which is the same for my (Dyson) vacuum cleaner.
The thing I did notice with the steam mop is that, as there is no product used, the floors are dull compared to using a mop and bucket with a good floor cleaning product, and you don't get that 'just cleaned' fresh smell. I think I will look around for some floor spray, or even dilute the floor cleaner I have got and spray that on the floor before using the steamer, and see if that works.
We have cats in our home and allergen/dust intolerance sufferers and so keeping the house clean has always been a priority. I am looking forward to getting the time to steam clean the carpets, as this helps to kill off dust mites and break down the dust so more can be vacuumed up.
