"Great day out…"
I went to Go Ape as part of a press trip expecting a military operation with camouflage and monkey’s swinging through the trees, but was really surprised at how nice and relaxed the whole day was. Everyone went at their own pace, which was really lovely and meant it lasted about 2 and a half hours.
You start off going through your harness fitting and once you get past the part where you need to avoid eye contact at all times with the men in the group because a glance anywhere else is quite disturbing, you start on the safety briefing. Instead of receiving the lecture I was expecting, we were given time to work out for ourselves how to use the clips and the pulley using the pictures provided in the practice area. Once we had worked it out for ourselves, the leader then goes through the actual process in a practice area to make sure everyone is fully aware before setting you free amongst the trees.
As someone who isn’t a massive fan of heights, my biggest recommendation is to sit and dangle in your harness-once you know that it’s going to catch you regardless, you find yourself much braver. The zip wires are absolutely brilliant fun and I have never been more scared in my life than jumping off the ledge for the monkey swing (though maybe not quite so scared as the man before me who I kindly pointed out his second clip wasn’t quite shut as he jumped-oops!). All in all the day was challenging both mentally and physically but I thoroughly enjoyed it and am already planning my next trip with the rest of the family!Read moreLess
