"A day at the races may not be the first…"
A day at the races may not be the first thing you'd think of as a family-friendly day out, but we were really surprised by the huge numbers of families, particularly those with under-5s at a recent Family Race Day at Ascot racecourse.
The course does a lot to make a day there work for families, but the specific Family events are particularly good way to introduce children to racing. On the day we went - a sunny Sunday in July - there was a good crowd, but not so many people that it would feel claustrophobic for toddlers. Entertainment included bouncy castles, storytelling, facepainting and officials were keen to make sure all children had wristbands with their parents' phone numbers on in case they got lost. Food-wise, we were in a box where you could request a kids menu, but there's plenty for children to eat here including a Pizza Express concession in the grandstand. Our eight-year-old loved going down to the Parade Ring to look at the horses as well as the excitement of everyone cheering on their horses and said she'd love to go again.
If you think you're going to be a regular visitor, sign the kids up for Ascot's Colts & Fillies club which is free to join for the under-16s and grants families access to a special viewing part of the parade ring and access to club-only treats like tea-parties and barbecues.Read moreLess
