This is a great place to take kids for a free day out. Some of the museum is currently being refurbished so you can't see the stuffed animals at the moment but there's still plenty to do including a fabulous aquarium and a music room where you can try out lots of different instruments. They also arrange special activities for children - there was wonderful story telling last time we went. The gardens are fab too with great views over London and you can take a picnic if you want to save some money.Read moreLess

I took the kids last weekend (aged 14, 11 and 8) and we had an absolute ball! There is so much to see and do. Stuffed animals (you have to see the overstuffed walrus), aquarium, bee hives, collections galore. This is probably one of my most favourite museums in London. And there is a great cafe and huge grassed area to eat a picnic or run around.Read moreLess

The Horniman Museum in South London is a great, free choice for half a day in the holidays.
It is easy to get to (although the Forest Hill station isn't wheelchair/pushchair accessible) and is free with a lovely park and gardens and great views for a picnic afterwards.
Inside there is a very good free aquarium, an interactive musical instruments display, an African collection as well as the hands-on room where children can handle/try on etc lots of exhibits with staff on hand for explanations.
During the holidays there are also craft sessions etc.Read moreLess
