It's really 2 visits in one: a large, well-maintained and restored medieval castle built by Henry II(exhibits good, but not a patch on Tower of London or Warwick) with plenty of staircases and tower rooms to explore; and then, what really makes the visit, are the secret labyrinth of war-time tunnels. The recreation of the underground hospital complete with blood dripping gurney, strong smell of antiseptic, and the lights momentarily failing caused one woman on our tour to faint! Not for the very young but any bloodthirsty child or WWII enthusiast. Free to English Heritage members.Read moreLess

We had a great day out here last month. Not only do you get access to the castle but we had 3 guided tours at no extra cost and enjoyed exploring the war time tunnels too.even my children enjoyed this historic building as we went on an event day which are held throughout the year. as well as the castle there was the obligatory gift, shop restaurant and trailer ride around the grounds. well recommended much improved since i went years ago!!Read moreLess
