I got this as an ex[pectant mum on the strength of the mumsnet reccommendation, there was some good advice in parts but there were other bits that werent very hewlpful, and i find myself not agreeing with parts like breastfeeding.Read moreLess
"Some good advice but not very well laid out…"
Some good advice in this book and has given me things to think about for what things will be like in less than 6 months time for me! The only gripe I had was that it wasn't very easy to just pick up and read, the layout wasn't that great. Other than that not a bad read.Read moreLess
"When you are in crises mode in the early days,…"
When you are in crises mode in the early days, this book makes it hard to find the information you're looking for, as it guesses when you might ask a question by age rather than just arranging them by topic. It does have a lot of info and lists and lists of ideas for solving problems. But I think it is pretty alarmist and suggests that parenting is quite difficult, really. For example, if you wanted to know what foods your baby could eat at what stage, you'd struggle to find out and even if you wanted to know what foods the authors thought your baby should be eating at what stage you'd be in difficulty, it's so oddly arranged and full of contradictory thoughts about what's a finger food and what's a choking hazard.Read moreLess

Comments from other Mumsnetters:
"Written in the familiar what to expect Q and A style it's a collection of simple, easy to understand advice, that as a first time mum with no experience of kids I found really useful.""Split into monthly age groups it's comprehensive and easy to refer to if you have a specific problem." "Not a barrel of laughs, but it offers practical, prescriptive, non-controversial advice on all sorts of problems in a readable form," and is " very helpful." The only problem for me was finding the time to read it and cope with a new baby at the same time!"Read moreLess

It isn't perfect, but this had the widest range of information in a non-preachy way of all the books I had. Very often, I would have a question and find that their FAQ-style had the exact same question.Read moreLess

I found this book too prescriptive, and it also quietly undermined breastfeeding in a subtle way, I threw my copy away rather than hand it on as I usually do with booksRead moreLess

As first time parents this book has been absolutely invaluable. Every concern or question we have come up with seems to be covered in this book in a very non-judgemental way. It's set out in a month by month format which hasn't alway fitted in with our baby son but the index is very helpful when trying to find the answers we needed.Read moreLess

Well, I am guessing that most people reading this think that this is a weird recommendation as a present for new parents, but i found it to be invaluable!
As a first time Mum, I went to ante-natal classes and did lots of research into pregnancy and the birth but stupidly, didn't really think that much about what to do when we got the baby home - duh!
This book was like a bible to me (as is the next one in the series now my dd is a toddler) - it's broken down by month and is full of information, tips and advice for new parents. It was particularly good as a point of reference and addressed many of my concerns, as well as being easy to read and very down to earth.
I really can't recommend this book highly enough, and am sure that other first time parents would love this too!Read moreLess

"This was a bit of a bible really for me…"
This was a bit of a bible really for me for the first year. I found it very useful. Having said that, I do agree with the reviewer below who commented that the illnesses section is scary enough to panic you several times over. Also I found the "what your baby should be doing by now" a bit worrying on several occasions. Plus, although some effort has been made to convert this to a UK audience, there are still some Americanisms (ie we do NOT all have paediatricians!).Read moreLess

A handy book that you will find useful information or handy tips when you flip any page at any time. I will recommend this book to expectant mothers to read at least the first month. It is when you need the handy tips most and knowing what to expect helps keeping you calm to deal with any situation. It is certainly exciting to read the chapters ahead of your child's age knowing what to expect. Well written, easy reading, good presentation.Read moreLess

This was the best book I bought! I read a heap of books during pregnancy and in the early days of parenthood and was tired of opinionated authors who only tell you "how it should be done". This book is factual and concise and doesn't preach. It just gives basic answers and guidance for everyday concerns.Read moreLess

I found this book rather preachy and not particularly well-translated from the American (certainly the edition I bought in 2006) - it went into great detail about the LATCH system (US Isofix; not available over here - for one example). Stopped looking at it after about 3 months. Plenty of info but wouldn't really recommend it on.Read moreLess

I have bought this as a gift for several new mums. In my opinion it is one of the best general parenting books on the market. It is laid out very simply and has a great index system. If you want one book that covers everything from developmental stages, vaccinations, behavioural issues, overview of childhood illnesses, first aid, diet advice, even recipes etc etc then this is worth every pennyRead moreLess

"After purchasing a veritable mountain of pregnancy books I found…"
After purchasing a veritable mountain of pregnancy books I found the "What to Expect" pregnancy book was by far the most informative. I wanted fact not full page drawings, diagrams and pictures. On that basis I purchased my second "What to Expect" tome, this time "What to Expect - The First Year"
... and left it in the nursery unopened waiting for the big day ......
I didn't actually open it until the evening after I arrived home from hospital and I had a crying baby in my arms and couldn't soothe her ... how was I surpos9sed to know babies do cry for up to three hours during a 24 hour period at that age! I hadn't even read the first chapter.
In hindsight I should have read at least the first sections before the big day!
I found 'What to Expect...' well written and well thought out. This book reassured me and provided sound advice and tips, and calmed me down when I thought I was going mad with 'what if' worry. At first I often read this whilst breast feeding but after a few days I found myself avidly reading every word, about a month in advance. After about six months as my confidence grew, I tended to dip in and out, rather than hanging onto it as a "How To" lifeline.
I tended to read the months either side of my baby's age as all baby's develop at differing rates.
The information on illnesses is good, and does not pretend to be a substitute for seeing a doctor. As an indicator of what to look out for and whether or not you should be concerned, it is great. For this reason, it does cover scary illnesses (don't dip in and out of this section unless you need to - you'll never sleep again!). Being a new mum is pretty scary never mind reading the illness section.
"What to Expect..." tries to be measured and calm, whilst pressing that if you think your baby is ill, however trivial, then call a doctor.
I'm so glad I bought it, it was fantastic support and has been read cover to cover, dipped in and out of, but strangely it was only fleetingly referred to second time around.
I could have managed without it, but life was much more rewarding with printed support at hand day and night!Read moreLess

I found this book good as i had a prem baby and so always refered back a couple of months to his adjusted age to see what he should or shouldn't be up to! This is a very comprehensive guide and has a clear layout. However, I felt that some of the expectations (what your child might be doing at the end of each month) were a bit ambitious and this could worry some parents. Also the illness part is quite frightening - I became convinced my ds had several life threatening illnesses once!Read moreLess

I found this book really helpful when pregnant with my first child. I lived away from my family, and didn't have much support, so it was a reassuring read. Now I have more experience as a parent, I would perhaps question some of the advice, but the book served me well at the time.Read moreLess
