"Good writing but Uncomfortable reading.…"
Thank you for the free copy which I received some time ago. I read the book and I agree with other reviewers the writing is very good and the approach to a difficult subject careful and slow. I did not enjoy the book because the topic was painful and I felt helpless and unable to understand how such behaviour could happen. It did show me how fortunate my life has been with the care of a loving father. A very modern man, just after WW2 he decreed that I was not to be smacked (my mum died during that war).Read moreLess
"A wonderfully moving family portrait.…"
From the very beginning I was hooked by Emma Brockes style of writing - her wit and understanding of the small acts that make for family life resonated with me. I adored her description of life as an only child as like 'being Spanish' (you'll have to read it!), but it is small snapshots like these that allow you to get close to the characters in her life story, and that of her beloved mothers.
The family story, although shocking, is told in such a way as to almost be a background to the real story, which are the relationships between the family members and how the events of their past have affected and shaped each of their futures.
Read it, you won't be disappointed.Read moreLess
