"Formulaic and nothing surprising…"
How many hot topics can you cram into a story? Well this one has most - child abuse, male rape, infidelity, bereavement both adult and loss of an unborn child, fertility, violence, murder, suicide and even the therapeutic value of gardening! All it really needed to complete it was a terrorist attack and Emma, our heroine, turning up with a Mary Berry bake to make everything all right.
Sorry but I read a lot and every single plot "twist" I saw coming. Nothing surprising at any point and it became tedious as it all played out exactly as I was expecting.
To whit I couldn't feel empathy for any of the characters and really was quite pleased when it was over.Read moreLess
"Original and Involving…"
I would struggle to categorise this book as I didn’t feel it was a thriller in the traditional sense. After reading the prologue I was expecting something a bit more of a formula crime thriller but soon became drawn into the lives of the characters and their emotional past and present to an extent that the “thriller” aspect of the book became secondary.Read moreLess
"Enjoyable but dark…"
This book covered lots of different themes including fertility, fidelity in relationships and loyalty. At the centre of the story is one childhood incident which is not revealed in any detail until much further into the book. However, this one incident colours how the main characters react to disappointments and how they interact with others, shaping their whole adult lives. The story became quite fast-paced and tense towards the end. The ending was strangely satisfying but also a bit too neat in a way...I don't want to give anything away.I enjoyed this story increasingly from the rather slow first chapter and was gripped by the end. I would definitely pick up another book by this author having read The Judas Scar.Read moreLess
"A great page turner…"
The Judas Scar is based on the friendship of two young boys who are faced with adverse conditions at their boarding school.
Don't want to give too much away........It goes on to depict their adult lives and how their experiences as children are reflected in the way they handle situations now. Although one feels more sympathy towards one character,I really could see the pain that these men had suffered and the betrayal one of them felt.
Couldn't put the book down until I'd finished it!
What I found very interesting was the author's note at the end of the book and how she had come across and researched the awful experiences some children are faced with during their school years.Read moreLess
"Tense, psychological thriller that will have you hooked…"
This story of how a childhood incident can still be causing ripples many years later, is superb. The three central characters; Will, Harmony and Luke have physical and psychological scars that are gradually revealed in a gripping, story of a struggling marriage, childhood bullying and the misery of miscarriage. The plot moves along at a cracking pace and I couldn't put it down once I'd started.
If you like dark, psychological dramas with plenty of twists along the way, you won't be betrayed by 'The Judas Scar'Read moreLess
