I absolutely loved this book and I couldn't put it down! I read it on holiday and nearly got sunburnt finishing it! The characters were very believable and I became absorbed in their lives which were all quite privileged and the whole book was set in the aftermath of World War One. I've always enjoyed Adele Parks and she didn't disappoint with this book!Read moreLess
"Beautifully written, loved it…"
I absolutely loved this book. I've always been drawn to the 20s and the books describes everything as I imagine it myself. I read it over about 4 evenings, it kept me up til about midnight each night because I just didn't want to put it down!! The characters are believable and realistic, the description of the settings and fashions so glorious. Just wonderful.Read moreLess

This outstanding author moves to a new genre; historical fiction and excells.
The characters are well developed and unforgettable. The plot is unpredictable and enthralling.Read moreLess

"well written but heavy going…"
Though interesting as a historical novel as it was well written and well researched I found it extremely difficult to get into, nearly giving up several times. A pity as it should have been a beautiful read, and the final twists to the plot helped make the effort worthwhile.Read moreLess
"Genuinely impossible to put down…"
Fantastic book that I had intended to keep for my hospital bag, but it never survived! Read in one sitting = one very tired mummy.
The story follows the lives of four women post world war one, and how they dealt with their changing position in a society used to be male-dominated, but now lacking a generation of men.
It's a very well told story, richly described characters and I was easily swept along with the story set in a period of time I didn't know too much about.
My only complaint was the ending felt a little rushed, though it wasn't disappointing. A great read I would recommend to everyone.Read moreLess
"Lightweight summer reading…"
I received my free copy just before going away for a few days(thanks ever so Mumsnet) this book is a lovely light happy ever after summer read. It has some good points to make about the rigid class structure and the glaring ironies of post WW1 upper class life, particularly from a woman's point of view
My only criticism would be that having constructed a good and interesting tale of her four characters the author ditches the details of three of them to rather hastily conclude the romantic story of one of them
In summary: great story rather predictable endingRead moreLess
"Great read very apt subject for WW1 centenary…"
Loved this book, started reading it almost as soon as it came. It's a good historical novel that depicts the lives of men and women after the Great War. It's an easy read, took me a couple of evenings to finish it. It transported me to the 1920's and I could really picture the characters and the effect the aftermath of the war had on the lives of the four main female characters and the men who returned from the battlefield!Read moreLess
