"Kept me rivetted, despite a culinary disaster.…"
This is far from the genre of book I normally read but, having been sent a free copy by Mumsnet (Many thanks!), I decided to give it a go. A fascinating read, the issue of a child's intersex status, and how it impacts upon a whole family, is explored, sensitively and without sensationalism. The characters are well developed and sympathetically drawn,(including a younger sibling who indicates having an autistic spectrum disorder) and I found I really cared about the well-being of Max. I knocked a pint of milk over this book but found it so absorbing (and absorbent)that I was obliged to persevere, prising pages apart to reach the end.
Good to be tempted out of my comfort zone but would have appreciated a wipe-clean copy. :0)Read moreLess
I don't think I would have chosen this book in a shop, but received it free from mumsnet (thank you). Coming of age story with an unusual perspective, though the disturbing, graphic abuse scene near the start means you probably would not want to give it to a young teen. Story told using the voices of different characters; I think that approach worked well. Overall a good read.Read moreLess
"Great start...not bothered by the ending…"
I was thrilled to have won this book from MN thank you!
From the beginning it was gripping, a real 'stay up until 3am' doozy...and then, well it just sort of skipped and jumped a bit to the ending like it was rushed...and then petered out...disappointed if I'm honest (and why on earth was I reading it in my head with an American accent?!)
The subject of intersex itself intriguing, the storytelling had great potential but big chunks missing and left me meh
The star rating should just be left at 'not bad'...Read moreLess
"Not a masterpiece but definitely an engaging read…"
I did find this a really gripping story. I didn't know much about the issue of being born intersex before so it was a fascinating subject and an intriguing story line. However I did have some small reservations about the tone of the book. Having read a lot of YA literature recently, I felt it fell between two audiences. Although it was dealing with an unusual issue, the story was very much focused on teenage problems and anxieties and felt it was aimed at a YA reader - (my 12 year old daughter read the blurb and was really keen to read it) However some very disturbing elements of the story (a fairly graphic rape scene for example) made it totally unsuitable for this age group. Written from the first-person perspective of a number of different characters, I felt the 'voices' could have done with being more distinctive too - with more exploration of the motivation behind the parents' decisions for example. Nevertheless, a very engaging and memorable book, I would definitely recommend it as a good read.Read moreLess
