"interesting but disappointing…"
Thanks to Mumsnet I got a free copy of Sisterland. it was on my wish list anyway as I loved of all Curtis Sittenfeld's books. I liked the premise of it but the detail that she went into got a bit tedious. I understood why she went into details about Kate's routine but it was a bit boring. The relationship between the sisters was interesting and what i I enjoyed was how different they were and while Vi celebrated her quirkiness, Kate used alot of her energy to lead a very straight life which in the end backfires. Not sure about the whole earthquake thing but I am also v interested in people having an extra sense. Sometimes people are more in tune with feelings and a general sense of people and things around them and I think that is what the author was trying to convey with Vi and Kate. Interesting read all round!Read moreLess

"This captivated me…"
I loved this book, it was the first in a long time that I simply didn't want to put down. I found the characters believable (though at times, frustrating) and thoroughly enjoyed the story. I adored the use of the small details too, whether it was a description of an outfit, music or food, but it helped to capture a time and place really effectively.
There were small elements that, as I look back, I'd have wanted different outcomes to, but overall, it was a wonderful way to lose several evenings and catch my breath.Read moreLess

I was really looking forward to reading Sisterland as I loved American Wife. Unfortunately I was disappointed. To me it felt like it had been written by a different author. The premise is a good one but for me it failed to deliver.Read moreLess
"Difficult to get into…"
Sorry to say I could not get any enthusiasm for this book and gave up after reading around one quarter.. I was looking forward to starting this as I have read Prep and American wife by the same author and loved them both.
Unfortunate but I suppose it is just not everyone's taste!!Read moreLess
"Holds the reader…"
Not my usual sort of book. Having said that I didn't want to put it down and read it over 3 days. Very believable even though it was dealing with the para normal. The storyline tackled real life issues and you can imagine it happening in real life and panning out the way it did. Sort of a bit disappointed that the ending was a bit flat but guess thats the Authors style. Overall it made a lasting impression and was a good read.Read moreLess
I was consumed by this novel, and found it very hard to put down.
I found the main plot, which was about the prediction of an earthquake on a small town in the USA intriguing and felt that the characters were very believable. However, I also enjoyed the sub plots; the complexity of the twin relationship, the effect of a traumatic birth on a mother, racial stereotypes and the effect that a termination has on the friendship of two women.
In short I loved it and am missing it now that I have finished it, for me the sign of a great book.Read moreLess
