This story follows the life of Lev, a newly arrived, Eastern European immigrant, trying to find his way in London.
Rose Tremain is a marvelous writer. She has a way of making you connect with her characters and seeing life in a way you hadn't seen it before. I buy all her books as soon as they are published in paperback (or ask for them as presents usually). They are stark stories, full of the reality of life and not skimping on the nit-and-grit of how things really are for people.

In a country where the press is often dominated by negativity surrounding Eastern Europeans living and working here it was refreshing to see it all from the other side. From someone who came here seeing the promise of a golden land but finding the bleak reality of life on minimum wage. That said it i not a heavy dreary book but an easy read full of ups and downs. I can't wait for her next book.Read moreLess
