I found this book very hard going. The storyline was good but it wasn't really until the middle that things started to get really interesting.Read moreLess
"okay but forget the hype...…"
Finally got round to reading this. I imagine others maybe in that position too so thought it worth a review. Overall I found it intriguing, and I'm glad I read it, but it's really not deserving of the hype.
The story centres around Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who faces a libel lawsuit. He was set up. He knows this and he is desperate to clear his name and bolster the kudos of his magazine. So when the head of a respected corporation approaches him saying he has exactly the information Mikael needs, he is tempted into accepting Henrik Vanger's deal: Mikael will spend a year investigating the mysterious disappearance of Henrik's niece, Harriet, which happened many years ago, in return for money and the evidence he needs.
Mikael finds himself in fresh pastures, and starts digging around in the Vanger family's past. Then he meets Lisbeth Salander and I have to admit up until this point I found the book a bit of a meandering mess. Lisbeth, whose presence has been mentioned before, is fascinating. Her history and legal status are intriguing, as is her complete distrust of authority.
Lizbeth has a twisted morality, but is shrewd and bright. Her involvement with Mikael is what really kicks the investigation into high gear.
The plot is clever, too 'clever' some might say, but the strands do come together into a cohesive story. There is a lot of violence, some sexually graphic, so this will not appeal to everyone. However, if you are a fan of plots that make you work hard, and you can cope with a full cast of characters, then this would be a very satisfying read. I'll be honest though, if it hadn't been for the hype, both about the book and the film, I don't think I'd have made it to halfway through when Lisbeth finally kicks in as a character...Read moreLess
"a fantastic book that I was sad to finish…"
I struggled with the first few chapters of this book, as I think most people do, as the names are difficult to remember.
However once you get going, it is so exciting you don't want it to end, and you have to read the other 2 books.
I've seen both films and the recent one is the better one, very true to the book.
I recommend if you like a thrillerRead moreLess

I'm not usually a thriller reader but a friend said I 'HAD' to read this, so felt obliged to give it a go. I was hooked from the start. I couldn't put the book down - there's so many surprises and twists along the way and I was still surprised to the end. Incredibly well-crafted and a lovely simple style that makes it a joy to read. I'm delighted there's another 2 in the series. As my friend says - 'you HAVE to read this book'Read moreLess

hugely enjoyable thriller set in sweden . it is a bit difficuot to get familiar with the characters and geography to begin with but the plot development is great and it is a real page turner . there are 2 later books and i cant wait to get stuck into them. overall i would say it is a bit like a traditinal whodunnit in that there are a known limited number of people who can have committed the crime and there is a good twist at the end. the author is sadly now deceased but was an interesting character in his own right as an anti- facist journalist .Read moreLess

"Despite the slow start to The Girl with the Dragon…"
Despite the slow start to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I was soon hooked and devouring this book avidly. As the book moves past its intense character establishments, I was gripped by Larsson's ability to create suspense and intrigue. But, like my discovering of Angela Carter's work, I have once again come to a great author after they have passed away. Fortunately Larsson had given the other two books in the trilogy to his publishers, so I have those to look forward to. I feel we have all been robbed of a great thriller writer here.Read moreLess
