"A story of family and conflict during the biafran war"
23-Apr-2010
A story of family and conflict during the biafran war of the 1960's
It's one of those books that you can't believe has ended. You crave more information about the central characters Olanna, Ugwu and Richard.
At the beginning Olanna is a well off married woman with servants. But war takes her home and her family are scattered. A truly rich insight into a part of history I had very little knowledge about.

Agree with Flame - it really shines a light on history shamefully underexposed. A powerful depiction of an African middle class family sucked into a situation beyond their control.

"This is a brilliant book. I felt ashamed after reading"
21-Nov-2008
This is a brilliant book. I felt ashamed after reading it that I knew so little about Biafra. Even better than Purple Hibiscus, the characters are beautifully drawn in a great and moving story.

This book is gorgeously written. The main characters are so believable and intriguing. The book is hugely informative about Nigerian life without being preachy. I couldn't put the book down - I cared so much about the characters, I did not want it to end. Looking forward to reading more of this author's books.

"I knew nothing really of the war of Biafra -"
22-Jul-2008
I knew nothing really of the war of Biafra - this book taught me a lot, even if it was mainly from a "middle class" perspective.
It was not an easy read, but from what I learnt, it was a good one.Read moreLessMumsnetter Flamesparrow
