"A great book and one of Iain Banks'top 5."
11-Aug-2008
A great book and one of Iain Banks'top 5. The angst of the main character is evident and you are given some explanation as to why, maybe, he is what he is but with the usual Iain Banks' darkness, you also feel the horror and evilness of this boy.
I love all his books and this is no exception - not Best Book Ever for me though.Read moreLessMumsnetter mammamic

"This is very well written and easy to read, not"
22-Jul-2008
This is very well written and easy to read, not gripping but a page turner non the less. It is a vivid description of human behavior and worse than average teenage angst.

"I read this when I was 19 and revisted it"
27-Jun-2008
I read this when I was 19 and revisted it after my 16 year old read it last week. Such an amazing dark book that deeply disturbed at the time (and still does I think!)
The book has stood the test of time and is very different to anything I have read since. I highly recomend this if you a looking for a read that is a little out of the ordinaryRead moreLessMumsnetter twinkletoesbellyrolls

"Refreshingly dark yet intelligent and not for the faint hearted."
22-May-2008
Refreshingly dark yet intelligent and not for the faint hearted. If you like fluffy books this is not for you. It's so awful (the content) that it makes me laugh out loud. Please do not let my son turn out like the 'hero' of the book. Have since read all of Ian Banks books but this demonstrates by far the most unusual perversity of life. Brilliantly written (his first).
