Read this awhile ago and loved it. The post war period and the trials of immigrants who strove against the odds to establish themselves is brilliantly described. However, this is an entertaining, humorous and page turning story. The characters are brilliantly portrayed and your heart cannot help but to go out to them. A good history lesson as well as an entertaining read.Read moreLess

"Our reading group reviewed this last year and comprehensively loved…"
Our reading group reviewed this last year and comprehensively loved it. It tells the tale of an independent-minded Londoner and her Jamaican ex-RAF lodgers in the aftermath of the second world war. Having fought for the Allies, the young men discover to their astonishment that they are not welcomed with open arms to the country they risked their lives for. This is a story about bigotry, love, loss and courage. Well worth a read.Read moreLess

Recommended by a friend. Very easy to read. Really enjoyable and thought provoking. Have recommeded it to others who also loved it. Certainly more than a holiday novel but would certainly not be too heavy for the beach/ on the train to work. Read and enjoy.Read moreLess
