"Wonderfully written…"

This is such a well written book, and possibly my favourite book of all time. I don't think the film did it justice at all. The descriptions are amazing and make you feel that you are with Jean-Baptiste in every scene. I would definitely recommend.

Enjoyed the read, not exactly light and happy. Good historic atmosphere. Found the ending far fetched to be honest. Well written though.

Not my usual type of book, but once started, I was hooked! It's a very dark, almost sinister plot but one that you find very hard to put down...I still think about the plot 4 years after reading it!

I've just re read this. (first read it when I was a student) and that was a very long time ago. I loved it just as much second time around. I really recommend it.

Fabulous evocation of a time & place - makes you think differently about your sense of smell!
The ending is a love-or-hate, but a very enjoyable, dark page turner.Read moreLessMumsnetter funnypeculiar

Fantastic book, really enjoyed it. I was hooked from the very beginning, the grotesque way in which Jean-Baptiste Grenouille came into the world, in the market place under the fish gutting table with the putrid smells all around. Loved it.

This is an amazing book. It is set in 18th Century Paris and you are immediately transformed to that place at that time. The main character is a sinister young french perfumier who has an incredible sense of smell. The author weaves through the story with an outstanding talent for describing scents and odours. It's dark, and at times horrific yet beauty jumps out from every page and you're left smelling all things good and evil.
