I enjoyed the narrative arc of Cloud Atlas, by the time I got to the second instalments I felt like I was visiting old friends. The characters have such distinct voices they are very believable and are sticking in my memory. The stories would be compelling enough if they stood alone, but David Mitchell structures them in such an intriguing way. The language keeps the reader challenged as well. One reason I enjoyed this book so much was that I know I will be able to read it again and again. I've since read Ghostwritten, and Black Swan Green, and they are also absorbing, moving reads.

Thrilling, complex, absorbing and immensely creative semi-SF novel which (from memory - apologies if there was more) creates two new future dialects and worlds, as well as skewering the mores of two past eras. Not for readers who like a clear plot with all the ends neatly tied. But perfect for those who like to be taken on a literary adventure with lots of challenge along the way.
