I bought this book after reading the reviews on this website. And was not disappointed. I have struggled to stick to reading any one book since I got pregnant, but this is beautifully written and holds the reader from start to finish. I would thoroughly recommend it.Read moreLess

Quite simply the best book I have ever read, and I have read a few! Unlike some books that are so good you don't want to put them down, I tried to read this as slowly as I could, because I didn't want for it to end. I buy it for friends and family, as I think everyone should read it.Read moreLess

This book taught me some of the shocking recent history of India, and about the political repression that has taken place in my lifetime. I was ashamed that I knew little to nothing about it. It spurred me into findng out more! This was my first RM, and I subsequently read the rest - all 10/10. He is a Parsi, so reading his books about family life will also tell you a lot about Zoroastrianism. Fabulous! I just wish he'd write some more!Read moreLess

I was lent this by a friend, who handed it over with the caveat "and you can call me any time of the day or night to talk about it when you finish it" which piqued my curiosity.
Even if it sounds outside your usual reading fare, (it was mine) I can't recommend it enough. I was hooked from the opening page and couldn't concentrate on much else until I finished it.
Makes a Real Impression.Read moreLess

I was amazed and delighted to find my number one book in the top spot on the reviews table. I read it a couple of months after spending the most incredible six months in India and it made a huge and lasting impression on me.
It reflects the compassion, eccentricity, corruption and poverty that was India at the time simply perfectly. Some regard it as a depressing, shocking read but I also found it stragely uplifting and enjoyed the occasional bizarrely comical vignette.
Quite simply an epic, beautifully crafted and stands head and shoulders above any other book I have ever read.Read moreLess

I read this in hospital during labour with my first baby. I couldnt put it down!! It is a fantastically written story set in India in the 70's. The main characters are two tailors (uncle and nephew) and the story follows the (sometimes cruel and even heartbreaking) twists and turns of their lives.Read moreLess

Just fantastic. It teaches you things about India you didn't know you didn't know and realise you didn't really want to know either. It brings out all sorts of emotions but it entertains at the same time. I haven't felt the same about other Rohinton Mistry's books but I think everthing came together in this one. I usually give it as a present for teenagers in my extended family. Bit of a kick up the bum when they think their life is hard...Read moreLess

Looks challenging, but grabs you right from the start; a train, two men going somewhere and having a grumpy, chatty conversation. You just want to know what happens and how the characters get on. Along with that, its voice is as warm as a hand holding yours, but its plot is as hard as steel. This may change your life, your perceptions and your soul. It doesn't get better than this.Read moreLess
