"Fast moving and compelling…"
A good read.
In terms of being helpful to young people at risk I thought it would be an ice-breaker for conversations with teens about the danger of being away from home. I would use it to talk about watching out for signs that a friend is in trouble and when to speak to an adult/who to talk to. The cover was a bit too pink to appeal to boys.
My only other criticism is that it could have been an opportunity to flag up some of the free and confidential help available for runaways and people thinking of running away, eg Child Line or the 116 000 helpline offered by Missing People. What if she has seen a 'missing' poster of herself, or one of the kids she was with?Read moreLess
My DS aged 10 wished to read this so I quickly read it first to check content. It was thoroughly compelling, realistic and very sad. It highlighted some parents' inability to put their children's needs before their own desires. Fortunately, it has a happy ending. I will be passing it to him to read.Read moreLess
"Hard hitting but easy to read…"
I read this out loud to my son yesterday, its a tough subject but easy to read and therefore makes the subject matter of running away much easier to discuss. You really feel for Gabriella and what she goes through with her parents & subsequently living on the streets, all the while hoping for a happy ending. Although the book states for age 9+ i feel that it also has its place read to younger children. A thoroughly good readRead moreLess
"Well written and harrowing…"
I read the book yesterday, and thought it well written and gripping - but very harrowing in parts, and as my dd is only 9 I discussed it with her, but haven't given it to her to read at this point.
She was interested, and we did get to discuss runaways generally, which was good. But she agreed she would be 'too sad or frightened' by the story and didn't want to read it herself.Read moreLess
My 12 yo dd read it all in 24 hours and described it as thoroughly gripping and very realistic. Parts were very sad but appropriate considering the subject matter- teenage runaways. For a tough topic for young readers it's a bit short and maybe the characters needed to be fleshed out a bit better but overall a very effective way of tackling a topic we should be talking about more with our kids. Not appropriate for under 10.Read moreLess
