"Wonderful…"

Underdog by Euan Leckie is a truly wonderful novel that works really well on several levels. It works as a novel about teen issues, as a novel about family and friendship, and as a novel about animal welfare. The characters are all brought to life vividly (including the dog Jeffo). It's well written, heartfelt and compelling.

"A must read for all young adults and parents alike…"
09-Oct-2012
I recently was recommended this book about a young boy struggling to cope with the loss of his mother. The backdrop of the book is set amongst an underground dog fighting ring and whilst not only being beautifully written touches on many subjects close to many young peoples hearts; bereavement, bullying, self harm, alcohol and drug abuse. The book is not patronising, nor does it glorify the horrors of the animal abuse, but uses them as an allegory to the young boys emotions and ultimately his coming of age. This really is a well written easy to read novel that is instantly a modern classic. An absolute must read for any teenager, and any adult - highly recommended.
