This is an amazing book. I read it whilst on holiday on Spetses, where a lot of the book is set. I was quite young at the time and it really had a lasting effect on me. The first book I read which I could not put down, stayed with me in my dreams and made me realise what truly epic literature is all about.

I read this book twenty years ago as part of an A-Level assignment! I remember loving it and feeling like I'd lost a friend when I finished it! Must go back and reread it and see if I still feel the same way! Fowles is a hugely entertaining writer who often makes 'cameo appearances' in his own novels. He describes himself as an onlooker whose characters take on their own life and purpose. A classic A-Level text, along with 'French Lieutentant's Woman' and 'The Collector.'

A complex and sophisticated story about the mysterious events surrounding a boy's boarding school on a remote Greek Island. Set in the 50s, it follows the story of a young English teacher who is drawn into a web of secrecy and lies by a local resident. A very good read, that you can go back to time and time again.
