I have never been sure why this book attracted as much attention as it did. I disliked the main character from the start, and although it's well written, I just didn't enjoy it.

Have to agree, I read this as a teenager and loved it, but re-reading it later I found it whingey and irritating. Still a great book though.

I read this when I was younger and remember it being fantastic. I re read it last week (as a 40 year old) and found it rather irritating, although I could still see why I found it great when I was younger. It is rare that I read a book twice as i am such a slow reader, and even though I didn't enjoy it much second time round, it really does show the agonies of teenage years and issues around mental health problems. I thoroughly recommend it and it is a less frustrating insight into teenage angst than the Guardian's Living with Teenagers. Worth a read, if only so you understand other literary references to it!!! A very easy read classic.

I read this book as a teenager, and it really made an impact on me. I was struggling with the usual teenage angst, and really found the book profound.
I have read it several times, I really love the writing style.Read moreLessMumsnetter ElfOnTheTopShelf

This is such a fantastic book that can be read over and over again and is very easy to read. The main character is a likeable teenager who is struggling to come to terms with events around him and growing up generally. He makes you laugh with his sense of humour but there is a deep hint of sadness in his narrative. I would definitely recommend it!
