The best book ever....it has everything!!!! Wit, warmth...in depth understanding of people. Romance ....but so much more. I never studied Austen at school and I think coming to it as an adult was the best thing. As a child you can't appreciate the subtle irony!Read moreLess

I did not really enjoy Jane Austen at school but reading it again it I finally get the power of Austens words. Wonderful prose written by a truly insightful mind everyone should read this book at least once. Original characters and gripping plot with the right mix of humour. This is an okay book, will always be mentioned within any top 100 books of all time list (and will no doubt always hover around the top ten) but it did not excite me as much as it has so clearly to the other reviewers. I just think that there is so much more out there that is on a par and beyond but just never seems to be mentioned.Read moreLess

This book is a lifelong delight for me. The plot is brilliant, the characters and their development are handled very well, and the clever use of language is a joy. It is full of cheeky humour, and is one of those books that makes you stop and read out short passages to whoever else happens to be in the room with you. At the same time, the language is quite accessible and easy to follow for those who are not used to reading older literature.Read moreLess

I love this book, having been forced to read Austen as part of English studies at school I began to understand what the hype was about and having read P&P I now couldn't be without it. Its just a wonderful escape for the daily grind with fabulous characters and gripping plot with a lot of humour and human observation. I love it - though didn't think much of the recent TV twist on this classic tale!Read moreLess

"An absolutely wonderful book. This is a story about Mr…"
An absolutely wonderful book. This is a story about Mr and Mrs Bennett and their daughters, set in the times when it was deemed necessary and economic to marry off your daughters. The way in which the book is written makes it outstanding and the description of Mrs Bennett and her bahaviour is really amusing. In fact, you feel embarassed for her poor daughters. The main character is Elizabeth Bennett, who falls madly in love with a handsome, dashing character who is also extemely rich. He though, makes some very snobbish remarks and seems very class predjudiced. In her pride, Elizabeth turns down his proposal. All is well at the nail biting end though, and they live happily ever after! Such a classic book.Read moreLess

"I will never get bored of re-reading this book.…"
I will never get bored of re-reading this book. A mixture of wit, romance, period drama, etiquette, suspense... It has endured well over time and has captured the hearts of many (displayed be the fact the BBC keep remaking television drama based on it every few years). It transports you back to the era where you can drift into another reality and forget the world outside. I think I'll go and get a cup of tea and sit and have a read of it again.Read moreLess

I adore this book, it is the best ever. I have read it a million times and it is like an old friend. I always pick it up up if I feel fed up and it never fails to put a smile on my face. Lizzie is an amazing character with intelligence, wit and a great sense of fun, definitely one of the best female characters written. The love story unfolding gets me every time and I can't wait to get to the part where they finally reveal their feelings to each other. Writing this has made me want to read it right now. I cannot recommend this book highly enough - everyone should read it. I also love the BBC adaptation but nothing beats the book.Read moreLess

A total delight to read. The perfect romance with wonderful comedy. There is no better way to escape. I have needed to mature to fully appreicate this book. It was nothing special when I was forced to study it at school -now in my 30s I can fully appreciate it - and cant help but laugh out load. Some parts are so beautifully romantic that I find my toes curling! Combine it with an indulgent 6 hr session of watching the BBC Colin Firth adapatation, a tub of maltesers and you will be in heaven. Nappies, washing, school runs, work seem miles away. Tis a truth universally acknowledged that a woman in procession of a bit of time must be in want of a good book. And this has is all, love, lust and scandal. The BBC adaptation was good but nothing beats a good read. It's a gentle wander through a past time when manners and class distinction prevail but for all that the relationships between people are the same as they are today. Worth putting your feet up wit a cup of tea and a big box of chocs and just wallowing.Read moreLess
