"Imaginative story with unusually poetic text…"
This story about a shy queen with no appetite (Queen Nibble) visiting a noisy playful gourmand (Queen Munch) is full of Duffy's imaginative prose. Images stand out in the memory…Queen Munch has eyes the colour of chutney and plaits like strings of best sausages while Queen Nibble is as pale as a cucumber and dries her pale dresses in the moonlight. Children love the illustrations by Lydia Monks too – like the enormous birthday cake in which Queen Munch hides as Queen Nibble arrives, spatting dollops of icing everywhere when she jumps out as a surprise. Without giving the ending away, the story is transformative in a really sweet way and we're always hoping Duffy will write the sequel where Queen Munch goes to visit Queen Nibble's palace. The story could have done with a tiny bit of editing as it makes a rather long bedtime story without chapter breaks, but it's been a favourite with both of our children over many years.Read moreLess
