Magical and simple. 4yo DS keeps getting it out for his bedtime story and is mesmerised by it. I thought he might think the monsters were scary but he's fine with it. This evening 2yo DD decided she wanted it for her story too. She sat still through the whole book, a rare event for her.
A comforting classic.Read moreLess

This remains my favourite children's book of all time. Written in the 1960s, it still resonates and has been turned into a children's opera. As a young child, I would beg my older sisters to read it to me every single night. My eldest sister is still able to quote the whole book unprompted - she's nearly 50! I bought it for my baby whilst I was still pregnant. My baby already loves it, though will appreciate it more as she gets older. It may be full of monsters but they're all controlled by the gorgeously mischievous Max. Reminiscent of 'The Owl and the Pussycat.' Just fab!Read moreLess

This book is a lot of fun once you get to know it.
On the first read I was thrown by the lack of punctuation and didn't get it, but my Daughter (24 months) wanted to read it every night - now I love it as much as she does.
The pictures of Max & his dreamworld adventure with the Wild Things are captivating. Thanks to this book I now remember how vivid my imagination was as a child.
We have fun doing actions to the Wild Things 'roaring their terrible roars and showing their terrible claws' etc.
The Wild Things are actually quite scary monsters - but my little girl has no fear of them and shows them great affection, even giving them each a kiss goodnight on occasion!Read moreLess

My son adores this book and even made up a song for the 'wild things' rumpus' which we have to sing every time we get to the relevant pages. Although like all parents I find reading some books over and over again quite tedious, this one survives the re-reading test quite well. The drawings are also beautiful.Read moreLess

A classic children's story, perfect for little ones who have their moments - we're all 'wild things' sometimes, after all. The main character is Max, who after a wild moment at home, is sent to his room. From there he travels to where the wild things are and is crowned king of them all. But he misses being loved... The story and illustrations capture the powerful streak of cruelty that children have, alongside their vulnerability and imagination. Just as potent now as when it was first published.Read moreLess

My daughter is not yet two but having been given this book as a gift, loves it. Although she may not understand the story fully just yet, she evidently enjoys the rhythm of the poetry and the colourful language, and stares at the pictures transfixed alternately laughing and looking sad at the appropriate places. The structure of the story is an excellent, the language is excellent and in combination with amazing illustrations I would highly rate this book, which I had never seen before.Read moreLess

"Max is a great character. Overstimulated by bed time, he is put to bed without any supper and dreams of a place where he is king of wild things." The book works on many levels as all the best children's books do - keeping adults and children entranced." "This book is my little boys passion. He has just begun to enjoy make believe and this appeals to his growing sense of imagination." "It pleasantly surprised me that my kids got just as much enjoyment from both the story and the pictures as I did as a child?"Read moreLess
"My daughter wants me to read this book agaain and…"
My daughter wants me to read this book agaain and again. I like the sense of build up which parallels the little boys emotion. There are very few words and the real story is told through the pictures. At the beginning of the book the pictures are small, almost box like as the child is clearly bored and frustrated, he feels boxed in. As his imagination grows so to do the pictures until the whole page is filled. At this point the child is immersed in his imaginings. At the height of the story the illustrations cover two whole pages, the child is completley involved in his story and the huge monsters which represent his parents are under his control. As the child gets bored the pictures start to shrink until he his back in his bedroom, which is now full sized. Hes calm and happy to be home. He finds his parents have left him supper, the anger has subsided and all is well. I think the illustrations in this book mirror the feeling children get when they are out of control or angry. My daughter can really identify with this book even though she cant express it in words.Read moreLess

A beautifully illustrated alternative childrens' book which uses the power of the imagination to tell its story. Underlying this unique tale, however, are the universal themes of the need for a sense of community, and the values of home life. Reminiscent of Lewis Carroll and wonderful for older children to explore visually.Read moreLess
