"A firm favourite…"
I love the fact that this book is still in print and hasn't been modernised. The words and pictures are lovely and it's stuck firmly in the 1950s.
Daddy comes home from work to find that there's no dinner on the table (because the tiger has eaten everything in the house so mummy says!) and it is daddy who has the bright idea of taking them all out for sausage and chips.Read moreLess

This is an all time favourite in our house. The words just roll off the pages and the wonderful pictures remind of times gone by, but are in beautiful clear colours.
It's the kind of book you couldn't possibly miss or change a word of as your child would notice and let you know! The humourous ideas appeal more as children get older, "You can't drink all the water in the tap!" But even my toddler, not quite 2 years, listens well and enjoys it from beginning to end. I think that every child who reads it just would love to be Sophie for that day.Read moreLess

Comments from other Mumsnetters:
Take a magical idea - a hungry tiger calls and eats all the food in the house and home so that Sophie and her mum have to go out and have tea in a cafe - and add lovely illustrations and you enchant both toddler and parent over and over again." "I remember this story being read to me as a child and love to read it to my daughter." "It is absurd and exciting and has great pictures - Sophie's diamond tights and her mother's dumpy seventies outfits make me laugh." "My desert Island children's book."Read moreLess

"Wonderful! This is one of my all time favourite…"
Wonderful! This is one of my all time favourite children's books. I have had a copy of this book for so many years and have read this story to my children and each one has loved it. Children can let their imagination run free. Many times I have had to change Sophie's name and read my daughter's name instead because she wants to be just like SophieRead moreLess

Although a little dated (daddy coming home at the end of the day in suit and trilby etc), this is still a simple but amusing tale that will appeal to a young child's imagination and nascent sense of humour.
The language is simple and accessible, the illustrations are charming, albeit a little old fashioned but the basic premise, that a tiger should knock on the door and eat tea with you, is a winner.Read moreLess

This is my daughters favourite book. She loves it so much she can read it to herself from memory. She finds it delightful that the tiger can be so naughty, eating everything in the house. She really identifies with the little girl in the book and even changes the name from Sophie to her own name. It is a wonderful book, easy to read and charming.Read moreLess

I adore reading this to my 2 and 4 year old, and they just over hearing it, over and over again. Some of the lines from the book have become part of our family culture..."I have a very good idea...I know just what we'll do!".
Love it, and love the fact that I loved it as a child too.Read moreLess
