"A beautiful book…"
06-Mar-2013
This was one of the first books to inspire a lifelong love of literature. I devoured Enid Blyton and this was one of my favourites. Now I can't wait to share it with my 5 year old.

Takes you back to your childhood when the thought of pixies and fairies was both scary and exciting. Highlights good and bad, provokes discussion on personalities and emotions. (Bad tempered goblins/good fairies)

I couldn't wait until my son was old enough to read this as it was one of my favourite's as a child. It still is a favourite and we have both enjoyed snuggling up and going to a different land every night!!! It is very stereotypical in places, but actually this then leads on to conversations about equality between the sexes!
Love it!! can't wait for the Famous 5 and Secret 7 now!Read moreLessMumsnetter Dozymare

It has been a delight to re read this with my 5 and 3 yr old girls, who beg every night 'which land are we going to tonight?'. Downside is that the characters continually eat sugar all day long, and yes the atttitudes and roles of the girls are pretty questionable. But this has raised some good discussions about how things change. There is also quite a bit of slapping going on which gets skimmed over! But you can't help but be pulled along by the stories and you can see quite clearly how much influence EB has had on many of today's authors.

Despite the old fashioned language not to mention the attitudes - the girls are constantly sewing and ironing and the boys digging the garden! my kids loved these books. They were absolute favourites from my childhood so I was delighted to read them again to my children. The characters up the tree are really funny and the stories are really exciting. I guess pop biscuits and slippery slopes will be exciting to children of all generations. Enid was certainly doing something right. Perfect for 5/6/7 year old boys and girls.

I read this to my children because I loved it as a child - I thought I was just indulging myself in a trip down memory lane but oh how they loved it. It is exciting and thrilling without being scary or threatening.
A great way to start children on 'chapter' books.Read moreLessMumsnetter BBBee
