An excellent imaginative book. Suitable from about age 2 and my son (nearly 5) still frequently asks for it at bedtime. A classic!

Excellent book, I have had this for all five of my children from about 2 years old and they all loved it. It has a lovely flow when reading and really keeps the children interested.

So lovely! First published in 1974, this is an old classic that I'd never discovered before. The story is easy to understand, the illustrations are full of detail and the text rhymes in a gentle and rhythmic way. Slightly infuriating that the female characters do the cooking and the males do the hard graft, but I won't let that get in the way of this wonderful book.

Bored of twee animal stories??
Brilliant book, my 2.5 year old & 4.5 year old both love it, very original, rhyming text, broad vocabulary. Kids think the story is very funny, detailed illustrations with new things they pick up each time. My 2 year old goes around chanting quotes from it. A bit like the humorous verse in Room on Broom etc but with 1970's feel.
I never get bored of reading it!Read moreLessMumsnetter rachyrachyrach
