Charlie is my Darling, by Malachy Doyle

We liked the book initially for the illustrations of the small white dog who looks at you with his big brown eyes. But then reading it out loud became a read pleasure - it's been written so that the words flow beautifully, like a poem. It always leaves me feeling that we've read something important and momentous.
