"My son (aged 9) really enjoyed the trilogy…"
Haven't read the books myself but was curious to read the other reviews because my son has just read all three of the trilogy. He has really enjoyed them, was totally immersed in the story and it has been great to see him so interested in reading something that is not Wimpy Kid or Harry Potter (both series I love but just nice to see him try something else).Read moreLess

Good but derivative. Incredibly overlong and tedious bit about the wheely things - only bothered to keep ploughing on because my brother gave the trilogy to me and raved about it. Most friends adore it and girls named Lyra popping up everywhere. But his was the most disappointing and overrated book I have ever read, apart from Captain Corelli - awful. Wanted so much to love it but thought everyone who likes it must have been brainwashed. The 'People's Heaven' bit was the final straw. Was it edited by Tony Blair?Read moreLess

"Classics of the future. When I read these books…"
Classics of the future. When I read these books I immediately thought of the pleasure my kids would get from them in years to come. Wonderful depth of imagination. These books can be enjoyed as adventures in their own right for younger children but also contain fairly dark themes for more mature readers. It's an overused description in book reviews, but this trilogy truly is a masterpiece.Read moreLess

These three novels are a better read for adults than even the Harry Potter books in my opinion. Overall, I prefer the first book - The Golden Compass - but I am so glad I read them all.
The adventure is gripping and thoughtfully written with lots of ideas to mull over.
I know these books are aimed at children, but I think the subtleties of the story and its description of growing up, is more suited to secondary school ages.Read moreLess

Wonderful, life affirming books - officially aimed at kids, but more than enough to keep an adult thinking, imo. Beautifully written, fabulous plots, and absolutely gripping emotional stories. Anyone who doesn't sob through the last chapter of the last book is a stronger woman than I am.Read moreLess

Now a super hyped film - 'The Golden Compass' (the first book only)
The best books I've read for years - and originally written for children!!!! You can completely lose yourself in Pullman's pages. The twists and turns are amazing and every page is more exciting than the last.
I cried reading the whole last chapter of the final book, not only because of what was happening in the story but because I knew that once I finished it, that was it.
An excellent, enthralling superbly written sci-fi which your children will love too.Read moreLess

I can't pick out just one of these, it needs to be the three really. They are marketed as "children's" books, but they are so much more than that. Yes, children would enjoy it in its more simple terms, but there is so much more to it. A fabulous story about love, growing up, good and bad, what makes us human, and so much more besides.
These books make me happy, they make me sob, but they are incredible.Read moreLess
