It really is a lovely story. I think it was written in the 50s so somethings were a bit incomprehensible to my 21st century Dc e.g. having to leave home because your brother has measles.

Wikipedia says: Tom's Midnight Garden is a children's novel by Philippa Pearce. It is considered a masterpiece of English children's literature, and won the Carnegie Medal in 1958.
I read it to my 6 year old daughter recently and she was enthralled. She was very intrigued by the notion of travelling in time and asked a lot of questions about this. Tho' the language can be a little archaic this is a beautifully written book ideal for reading aloud or for an older child to read to themsleves.Read moreLess

I loved this book as a child and have just finished reading it with my nine year old niece and have fallen in love with it yet again- as has she!
It is, in a nutshell, pure magical escapism.
By the end you feel as though you ARE Tom. Would recommend for independent readers aged 8+ due to some tricky words, or for reading aloud to children aged 6+Read moreLess
