"Good but not for intensive use…"
11-May-2013
Have used the Medela swing for PFB and it's worked well. What I like best is that it's genuinely portable (can be used with AC / mains or batteries, and has a little drawstring bag you can lob all the bits in to take away with you). The settings are really simple to control and effective.
But after using it twice a day for 3 months, the motor seems less energetic and I have a feeling it will go kaput sometime soon.....I won't be banking on having this for DC2. If you're expressing more than this, you need something more sturdy.Read moreLessMumsnetter rootypig

"Fantastic, efficient and lightweight.…"
27-Nov-2012
Very efficient and easy to use. I bought this 4 years ago, used for about 18 months and stored until a few months ago - its still going strong. Seemed expensive at the time but was definitely a good investment.
The letdown function works well and it is easy to adjust suction.
Can be used completely hands free with neck cord supplied and pump is lightweight enough to use belt clip and get on with things.
I find decent quality batteries last around 10-14 days used twice a day for perhaps 20mins a time - much better than I would have imagined!
The only downside is that if you lean forwards or too far sideways it's quite easy to suck milk into the tube. Don't worry if this happens though, there are instructions on how to clean the whole thing out.
Tip - if you think it's not working properly, shove the tube further into the pump... I nearly bought a new machine before I realised <blush>Read moreLess2 people found this review helpful.

Hardly used my Medela Swing first time round. Now had second baby and the motor's already broken. Complained to manufacturer and they just said it was out of 1 year warranty. Given how expensive it was, works out about £10 a go for every time I've used it. Total waste of money. Avoid.

I bought this as i struggled with a manual pump with DD1, glad i did as DD2 was in neonatal unit for 9 days meaning i had to express 3 hourly and needed a good, reliable pump. Very easy to assemble and use and i found expressing easy and comfortable this time round. Compact enough to carry aroud easily if necessary. A great piece of kit, a star deducted for price though, very expensive.

Really good product. Just wish I could have afforded the double pump so I could express both breasts at the same time. Or have some way of doing hands free. I did purchase an expressing bra which is supposed to enable you to do it hands free but that didn't work for me.

Fantastic buy! Well worth the spend - plus looking on eBay you are able to recover about 60-70% of your money back when you are done with it!
Comfortable to use, quiet and this also takes batteries as well as plugging into mains in case you need to use the pump when out of the home. I have tried several breast pumps before and never managed to get even an ounce of milk. After a few goes on the Swing I am able to express around 3oz from one breast in about 5 mins.Read moreLessMumsnetter LelliKelli

08-Jul-2011
After using my Medela Swing for just over four weeks, the SoftFit shield part of the pump began to deteriorate and tiny bits of plastic were getting into my baby's milk.
I contacted the company so many times about this and only every recieved two phone calls from them. I chased and chased them asking if this had happened to other mums, what the composition of the SoftFit shield was etc. They asked me to send the shield back to them to be tested to see why this had happened and to see if it posed any danger. They promised they would send me a report with the findings but they never did (despite numerous emails and calls to them).
I had to get trading standards involved in the end. Medela said they had identified a fault with the way the shield used to be made and have made some changes to it but the shield I was using was one of the new ones!
Anyway, I felt it was important to let others know my experience.Read moreLess6 people found this review helpful.

Found this great, hadn't wanted to spend out on it as wasn't sure I would use, but was given by my sister in law and think it is totally worth the money especially when you consider the benefits of breatmilk and compare to the price of formula. I managed to express for a long time after stopping breast feeding with this pump. Really easy to use and seemed very efficient. Would recommend, although would consider getting a dual pump next time, you may as well express both at once and save even more time!

24-Nov-2010
I have used the Medela swing and a tommee tippee electric breast pump (both were the same price) and i would definatley recommend getting a medela.
Slight problems ... You cant move while pumping as there isnt a proper seal between the pump and bottle so you end up spilling milk down you. I also experienced loss of suction, i scounred the internet to find out what the problem was and eeryone said it would be the membrane but i had already checked and changed that, i found that the attachment on the end of the tube was slightly misalligned (it is a triangle shape) when i just wiggled it slightly it got its brilliant suction back.
Apart from these it is a brilliant pump and the 2 suction mode definatley works to get the best milk production for me.Read moreLessMumsnetter DrewsGirl

I bought this pump a few weeks ago as my baby was born prematurely. I'm having to express 8-10 times a day using the pump and I find it really easy to use.
I also use a medela pump when I'm expressing in NICU and I think that my swing pump is actually better than the hospital pump.
It is quite expensive but it's easy to use, works really well and if you need to use it as much as I have to it's well worth the money.

13-Oct-2009
I reluctantly bought this pump after failing to get on with a manual pump. It is expensive, especially as I only use it to allow myself to go out occasionally. However, it is very easy to use and clean. Negative points - the valve is very small and I imagine would be easy to lose although you do get a spare. Also in the instructions it recommended boiling to sterilise but after e-mailing the company directly I found that you can sterilise it via the cold water method or in a microwave steriliser which has made life a lot easier.

In all, this is a great pump! I use it every day and wouldn't be without it. Would recommend to anyone.
I don't think it is quite as effective as the hospital pumps, but it is very close.
Haven't quite figured out if I can use it 'hands free' so that I can be doing two things at once.
Also, I have managed to get milk in the tubing a few times, not sure how this happens, but makes it a bit difficult to clean - though this would be the same with any pump tubing.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!
There are enough challenges in the early days that mastering or struggling with a breast pump shouldn't be one of them. It's simple to use and effective. What more could you ask?
Sure it's pricey, but my Medela Swing has been invaluable for me during the last 8 months that I've been breastfeeding and now seems remarkably cheap when compared with the cost of buying formula.

This is a great pump - nearly gave up on expressing when my Avent hand pump made me weep with pain, but the Swing has been a doddle from the word go. It is expensive, but if you're going to use a pump every day then it's worth it for the comfort and ease of use.
I was lucky enough to be given mine by a (close!) friend, it saw her through three babies and is currently on its fifth month with mine. I did get a rupture in the silicone cup that attaches to the breast, but this was quickly easily and cheaply replaced by Medela. Highly recommended all round.Read moreLessMumsnetter zinnia

15-Mar-2008
I'm really disappointed with this one. I bought it when DD was 7 months old, as my cheap avent manual one finally broke. I thought it would be easier, but it's far slower and fiddlier. The suction appparatus is simpler to fit together, but the suction's not as strong as I'd get myself with the manual pump, and you can't vary the rate of pumping, just the strength of the suction. So I can get more milk in half the time with the manual pump by going slower but with harder suction. The tubing gets condensation in it every time I use it, and the power cord isn't long enough to reach my chair. For

I have used it while travelling and find it pretty user-friendly in that respect. There are not that many parts and just have to watch out not losing the small valve. Definitely a good buy though it is on the expensive side.

This was a brilliant pump; quiet, quick and versatile, it makes discreet pumping easy. Much more comfortable than the hospital ones but just as effective. You really do get what you pay for -and it's easy to wash-up.

This was an absolute lifesaver when my LO had jaundice and wouldn't breastfeed for the first two weeks. It's almost as good as the hospital ones, quieter and much more portable. I like that the breast attachment is soft and also the two different types of pumping action, which really helped to get the milk flowing. Only one downside - if your flow is very storng you can occasionally get a backwash up the suction tube which can flood the machine, but as it's watrproof this isn't a real issue. Miles better than the manual pumps I tried.

I love my pump! This was fairly expensive but so quick and easy to use. The two phase action is great you get lots of short stimulating sucks until the milk starts flowing , then at the press of a button (or automatically after a while lest you forget!) it changes to long strong sucks. You can pump into the bottle provided or straight into sterile freezer bags or the bottles provided for milk donation also handily screw right on. It comes apart for washing, just don't lose the valve, but if you do there are spares and accessories available. I used it when my milk had just come in to soften my breast and pull out my (naturally rather flat) nipple to allow my ds to latch on and now express to freeze and donate every night before bed (ds now sleeping 7 - 7 :-)) and get 200 - 300mls in less than 10 mins.

Tried a good few breast pumps & this was the best Great "let down" function which really helped me get the most from expressing & easily adjustable to suit me. Runs on batteries as well as mains power so easy to take away with you. Fantastic buy
