"Really disappointed…"
09-Nov-2012
I was really looking forward to getting this after reading such great reviews but was so disappointed when I got it and wished I had stuck with my medela swing.
I needed a double pump to increase my supply and transition to exclusive pumping. I had read a lot about it and decided that a double pump would make things much easier, however, this is no where near as good as the medela. I can get around 5oz with that but with the ameda I couldn't even get 1oz!and I am an experienced pumper! It was fine on the single setting but once you add in the second pump, the suction is absolutely useless :-(Read moreLessMumsnetter Jenmcl

I wish I had known about this pump for my firstborn as I used to spend an hour at a time pumping... This one gives me the same amount in 15 minutes and I think if I had started pumping sooner after my milk came in I would be getting even more even quicker. Delighted and so so glad I asked my midwife which one she would recommend. She also recommended I make holes in one of my maternity bras to put the 'breast flanges' through -it means I can pump hands free and read a magazine, use the tv remote, play with computer etc. You can buy bras for this purpose but my homemade version is just as good and the bra would have only gone in the bin anyway. Another bonus is the pump is on special on mothercare online so I got it for only

"After reading many reviews and considering the comments here and…"
13-Feb-2012
After reading many reviews and considering the comments here and on other sites I preferred this pump overall. I have used it from Week 1, so Dad can do a night feed and Baby is now 9 weeks.
For a first time Mum the pump, as others, looks difficult to use let alone sterilising, added is the worry of it not working for you. But after doing it once you'll be doing it in your sleep, literary.
I found the function of suction and cycle to be a great combination and found the perfect setting for me and now don't need to change it each time I use.
For me I am able to express 6-10 oz in 5-10 mins; after last feeding 1-2 hours previously. This I believe is due to my body's ability combined with the pumps natural feel. On first use I expressed 8oz. Be aware of your mood too, deep breathes and relaxing really helps too. I also use to 'empty' the breasts after feeding when Baby is having a growth spurt, to have extra ounces in the fridge/freezer. Also useful when you wish to have a Glass of wine or for the babysitter.
I purchased the older model 2nd hand with the Areola Stimulator which give you more comfort and the natural feel.
The dual pump is a better buy if you leak from the other breast when feeding and can also be used as a single bump by sealing off the unused tube.
Great value for money as I hope to breastfeed up to 6 months and hoping for more children.Read moreLess2 people found this review helpful.

This pump is fantastic - without it I would have had to stop breastfeeding my baby because I was hospitalised 3 times in the first two months after she was born, but the pump was so easy to use and so portable that I was easily able to express enough to be sent home to feed her. I'm so glad that I spent the extra money buying this pump as it really saved me money, not having to use formula, in the long run.

I used this but to be honest prefered the portability of the manual Avent pump I had. It was good in the early days when my milk was less established, as it took longer to get the milk out then. I think it would benefit from a more shaped section to imitate the baby's tongue.

I bought a Lactaline second hand, then expressed with it 5 days a week (when working) for a year, and continued to use it when working away till my son weaned at 23 months.
It was fantastic - easy to use, efficient, and small enough to carry around.

Excellent pump!
I had a horrendous time in the 1st week after baby was born trying to get breast feeding going. So needed a pump urgently and bought the advent ISIS in a panic buy. It was awful. Was about the give up and bottle feed, until midwife and NCT b/f counsellor offered me the ameda lactaline.
It been a total life saver! So easy to use and very effective. Works at almost any sitting angle, so you can really get comfy (something which the advent did not allow) you cannot sterilise in the microwave, but I keep mine in the cold water steriliser until needed.
Works as well as the industrial hospital ones and although I paidRead moreLess3 people found this review helpful.

I brought this great product from ebay once my twins were born and proved to be a great buy. Ihad a Advent one with my eldest and found it ok but the ameda was great. I brought a easyexpress bra which has holes in to put the pump on so u can pump hands free. it was easy to put together and clean and I took the pump out with me when I did not have the twins with me as I had a carry bag, which had a cool part to it for expressed milk. a great buy and only quite expensuve (

I have to admit I haven't actually used the electric pump version of this but you can get a hand pump attachment for the same basic collection kit and it is the best pump I have tried. I found it comfortable and effective and it stimulated milk production far better than other pumps I have tried. According to the manufacturers the hand pump attachment it as powerful as the electric version although obviously more effort for you.
Only problem is that you can't microwave sterilise it so I boiled it in a pan.Read moreLessMumsnetter ClareyB

I bought this secondhand while expecting no 2. Really wish I'd had it the first time around. Once you get the hang of putting it altogether its really quick and easy. I even lost one of the valves on the last working day before Christmas. You can order all the spares from Ameda, and I was really happy and surprised when the new valve arrived the very next day in the post. Great product and great company.

"A fabulous bit of kit! Why didn't I get one…"
22-Jul-2008
A fabulous bit of kit! Why didn't I get one last time? This pump is really easy to assemble, and seems to be very efficient at removing milk quickly. It's not that noisy - my trusty Avent Isis which I used several times a day for 7 months with DS had a very loud squeak, which was probably more annoying than the sound of this one. The narrow necked bottles supplied didn't come with teats, but they're compatable with Medela teats that I found in Mothercare.
This pump got me through the first couple of difficult weeks when I was trying to kickstart my milk production. The variable settings also meant that it was gentle enough to help me express when I had a nasty bout of mastitis. A great bit of kit!Read moreLess2 people found this review helpful.

23-Mar-2008
This pump kept me breast feeding when I really wanted to give up. I'd tried others and got nowhere - and it was uncomfortable ( with already cracked nipples) This one was fast ( as dual) and pain free and got loads of milk out. I bought 2 full sets of everything that needed sterilising as I was mostly expressing to bottle feed at one point - so bad was actual breast feeding. I've had 2 and since lent it for 5 other babies - so it's durable too!

15-Feb-2008
Wonderful investment. It is pricey but then if you are serious about bf, it is VERY worthwhile. The pump is really powerful so it is fast. The fact that you can do 2 at the same time is a godsend - but you can have the option of doing one at a time if you want to as well - great for when you are feeding and pumping together.
It is also very mobile - I have even pumped at the O2 and Wembley so it can't be that bad :)
Can't rave about it enough. On a down side - Valves do go after a while - so would recommend that you purchase more from the outset so that you are not caught out. And it is not easily available in the shops. I had to go the West End to get mine!Read moreLess1 person found this review helpful.

29-Nov-2007
This revolutionised my breastfeeding life. I'd never really got on with expressing before, and was worried I wouldn't be able to work out how to use this, but it was pretty straightforward and easy to use and just so quick and efficient. Of course you look a mite strange when dual pumping but once you get over that it's just great to be able to express from both breasts - great for when babe starts sleeping longer but you wake up with aching bosoms full of milk!
Adaptable - you can use as a single pump and feed baby on the other side. Not cheap, but worth every penny if you want to make expressing part of your routine for a while.Read moreLess1 person found this review helpful.

29-Nov-2007
Fantastic. I expressed a couple of times a day for six months and it really stood up to the test. It's efficient because you do both breasts at once, and super-powerful - really was the most effective one I found for generating a swift let down and for overall milk production. It's a little bit fiddly but really does the job as advertised. As good as those industrial hospital ones. You might not want to cough up the cash if you're just planning on expressing occassionally but if you're doing it regularly it's definitely worth every penny.

Fantastic, particularly if you need to do a lot of expressing, eg for special care baby - I couldn't have lived without this! Both my babies had short-term feeding problems and one was in special care being tube fed for several weeks, so while I got to loathe the machine as I felt it was permanently attached at times, with distance and time I can look back and appreciate it, as I couldn't have done as much expressing with out it! Much less noisy than the hospital milking machine, and easy enough to put together in dim lighting in the middle of the night. I also lent it to a friend so it's lasted 3 babies and still going strong: pretty impressive.

I find this breast pump very straightforward to use and appreciate the variable suction and speed controls. It's comfortable and can be used as a single or double pump. It's quick, effective and relatively quiet. Can be run from mains/battery power. It's probably worth using an expressing bra to allow 'hands free' pumping! A really good product.

12-Jul-2007
Having previously just used a hand pump, I found the electric pump quite hard to get used to. I'd have liked the speed to go up a bit further, without having to increase the pressure. However once I sorted out a technique (I found I had to use the hand pump until I got a let-down, then switch to the electric pump) it was very easy and convenient to use. As other reviews have said, it is very quiet. Very few parts to wash up/ sterilise too! I did try the rubbery inserts but for me it worked better without. I really recommend buying an Easy Expression bra to use with it - looks scary but means you have your hands free again and you can (almost) forget you are expressing. (see http://www.expressyourselfmums.co.uk/easy-expression-bras/itemnum/140 )

07-Jan-2007
Great if you're a dedicated expresser - it helped me keep breastfeeding for 6 months after returning to work. As someone who is 'well endowed', it eliminated the problems I had with back pain from the awkward position I had to be in to use a hand pump. I didn't manage to double pump with it, but even one-sided expressing is much faster and easier than with a conventional pump. It may seem expensive, but it more than paid for itself within a couple of months.
