mumsnet: find the best : books
Buster's Day
Rod Campbell
What mumsnet members said about it: Each page features a typical day-at-home scene with lots of every-day items for learning vocabulary. "My kids enjoyed opening the flaps and touching the different textures from the furry cat to the smooth window pane from a very early age, almost as soon as they could reach out. Lifting the curtains, in particular, was a great favourite". "Opening the biscuit tin made the book a firm favourite with my son". "As ever with Rod Campbell the illustrations are simple but so identifiable for small children".

Goodnight Poppy Cat!
Lara Jones
What mumsnet members said about it: "This was such a hit with our daughter we have since bought most of the other books by this author. I can't honestly say whether it is the bright colours or the extra touchy feely bits on each page but they really seem to hold her attention more than any of the other books we have which are aimed at the same age group". "It's perfect for little hands. The chunky cardboard pages are easy to turn. The sticky chocolate page was a particular favourite, but my daughter also loves the twinkling stars and the teddy's furry tummy".

Spot's Touch and Feel Book
Eric Hill
What mumsnet members said about it: "Lots of different textures to touch, lots of flaps to lift up and surprises to encounter behind each flap". "This is a perfect book for a one year old - simple illustrations, lots to do and a dog to find. Spot was one of my daughter's first words!" "The illustrations are bright, simple and timeless". "One tip - buy the hardback. The paperback won't last long if your kids are anything like as destructive as mine".

I Like it When
Mary Murphy
What mumsnet members said about it: "Ever wondered how to sum up the special relationship that you have with your child and struggled for words? This is the perfect book to come to your aid. The repetitive text - 'I like it when you hold my hand...I like it when you let me help...' - gives little children the security of 'knowing'". "The ending is sentimental, nostalgic and heart-warming". "All my children have loved this book from being really small. Their reaction to it is wonderful".

Where is Maisy?
Lucy Cousins
What mumsnet members said about it: "This is a brilliant introduction to Maisy Mouse. Bright simple illustrations and easy flaps to lift for little fingers". "I bought my daughter this book for her first birthday and it's been a favourite ever since". "We love Maisy and this is a great book for smaller children who love playing peekaboo. Lift the flaps are a great way of introducing small children to books". "Do buy the hardbacked version - the flaps will not be torn off and it will last you so much longer".

Baby Shapes
Helen Dorman
What mumsnet members said about it: "This book comes with a black and white mobile and supports the principles which are set out in a parenting book; ‘The Social Baby'. Our baby certainly seemed to engage with the bold black and white images and stared for hours at the mobile". "These books have very basic black and white pictures which babies do seem to take an interest in even when they are very small". "We didn't have the theory book (‘The social baby') but still enjoyed looking at this together".

Clever Noo-noo!
Teletubbies
What mumsnet members said about it: "As most people know, The Noo-noo is the Teletubbies hoover. The nose is made of material, so your child gets involved by feeling the texture and laughing when you make the slurping noising whilst still being read a story". "All the Teletubbies books are fabulous for older babies and toddlers and this book is a particular favourite because of the felt NooNoo peeping through every page - there's also a lot of mess for him to clear up".

Guess How Much I love You
Sam McBratney
What mumsnet members said about it: "A wonderful book that communicates to children that love - especially a parents is unquantifiable; it cannot be measured because it is so great". "Lovely illustrations with a great sentiment".

Elmer's Colours
David Mckee
What mumsnet members said about it: "The Elmer range are a wonderful set of books for young children. Elmer is a bright patchwork elephant who gets up to lots of adventures". "Bright and colourful with some good contrast of colours". "This book held the attention of my daughter from two weeks of age. She now studies the pictures as I read the short story to her". "Also be useful for teaching colours to older children".

Where's Spot
Eric Hill
What mumsnet members said about it: "Mine loved opening the flaps and the seemingly endless search for Spot". "Kids love making the noises of the various animals behind the flaps. Quite a few of the flaps got trashed (they might have been a bit sturdier) but it didn't seem to impair their enjoyment". "Great from about six months to a year. Very repetitive and easy to read". "My five year old now reads it to the 21 month old".

Who's In The Garden
Naomi Russell
What mumsnet members said about it: "A lift the flap book with lots of animals and insects behind each flap - great for extending vocabulary". "A great guessing games for younger children -Each page asks a question like 'who's singing in the Rose buses?' and the answer lies behind each flap. Animals, birds, butterflies and kittens are amongst the things hiding". "Nicely illustrated and caught my daughter's imagination from a very early age. Taught her how to turn pages before one and now one she knows exactly what's coming next".
