Now for this week's parenting news...
Rise of smart phones in primary schools: A survey of gadget use among the under-10s suggests that children's access to the internet is growing faster than parents can control it. Westcoastcloud surveyed 2,000 parents of children under 10 and found that one in 10 children are using a smart phone and a quarter have their own email account. And although most of the parents surveyed allowed their children to use their own phones and tablets to access the internet, half said they had no parental controls installed on their internet-connected devices to block access to certain websites. (BBC News)
Facebook initiatives on teenagers and alcohol: An online campaign to encourage parents to talk to their children about responsible drinking and other alcohol issues, supported by Mumsnet, launched this week. Family Talk UK has set up a Facebook page where parents can access tips and suggestions about how to talk to their children about drinking, and share their experiences. The campaign coincides with alcohol brands agreeing a voluntary code of practice banning children from viewing their product pages on Facebook. (Press Association; Telegraph)

Aitch's TV round-up: Shirley, Thurs 29 Sept, BBC Two, 9pm
Irishwoman Ruth Negga wobbles her lip and extends her arms be-yootifully to play Dame Shirley Bassey in this interesting drama about the life of The Girl from Tiger Bay (although we learn that she was from the significantly less exotic-sounding Splott). The child of a man imprisoned for molesting a young girl, with her mother hard as nails and poor as a church mouse, there is no question that she worked her manicured fingernails to the bone to get where she got to. But, this drama asks, at what cost to the woman herself?

Baked spiced aromatic plums: Seasonal? Check. Dairy, egg and nut-free? Check. Low-fat? Check. A perfect way to use up this autumn's glut of plums (and to fill your house with appetising spicy smells).
